66 PROCLAMATION
City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS,there are sound economic,environmental and social reasons for local entities to encourage recycling to reduce
disposal costs,conserve resources and protect the environment. Local communities can do much to reverse environmental degradation
and contribute to building a healthy society; and
WHEREAS, Colorado State University is recognized as a top research university where interest in the environment runs
deep throughout the campus and the Fort Collins community. Colorado's environment serves as an"outside"classroom for Colorado
State University. The University teaches students and staff by showing commitment to the environment through education,research
and in its day-to-day operations. The Departments of Housing and Food Services, Facilities Management, and ASCSU commit to
support the Earth Day Recycling 2004 campaign by strengthening their partnerships with several Fort Collins community organizations
through the following actions:
With the help of Northern Colorado Aids Project(NCAP)staff and volunteers,a very conservative estimate of one
to two tons of clothing,household goods,food,and miscellaneous items were collected. These items were saved from
going to the landfill though the "Leave-It-Behind Program" which has become one of the biggest recycling efforts at
CSU. This event allows clients to participate by working with CSU and NCAP in preparation for distributing
collected items to various community organizations.
Food that is collected goes to the Larimer County Food Bank which in turn NCAP can access to keep its Food
Pantry stocked for clients; construction materials go to the Habitat for Humanity and through this partnership
NCAP can distribute vouchers for furniture for clients to be able to five on their own; pillows and bedding are
donated to the Open Door Mission; monies that are raised through the yard sale are used for prescription co-pays,
medical co-pays,rent, utilities and other needs that NCAP clients may have thoughout the year;and items left over
from the yard sale are picked up by Cerebral Palsy.
WHEREAS, Earth Day Educational Month will educate and raise awareness about reducing, reusing and recycling.
Colorado State University is hosting educational evens throughout the month to celebrate this worthwhile cause. Recycling is good
for the communities of Colorado State University and Fort Collins.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins,do hereby proclaim March 22 through April
22 as
EARTH DAY EDUCATIONAL MONTH--2004
in the city of Fort Collins and hereby encourage all residents, businesses and institutions to use Earth Day Educational Month to
education and celebrate peace and care to the earth and help restore and renew the wonder of fife on our planet--one human family,
one earth!
