HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 05/04/2004 - PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING 2004 AS THE RAILWAY SOCIE Mayor 6a PROCLAMATION City of Fort Collins WHEREAS, in 1908 the Denver and Interurban Railway began offering trolley car service in our city until 1918. In May of 1919 the City of Fort Collins purchased the trolley system and began operating trolley services to residents utilizing state-of-the-art Birney Safety Cars; and WHEREAS, Fort Collins was the smallest municipality in the United States to own and operate a trolley system and continued to offer services to residents until 1951; and WHEREAS,after services were discontinued, Car#21 became a museum piece maintained by the City until the Fort Collins Junior Women's Club, led notably by Carol Tunner, began organizing efforts to restore Car #21 in 1977; and WHEREAS, various railway enthusiasts, craftspeople, historians and others,far too many to mention,formulated a vision to restore Car #21 to operation along Mountain Avenue and this vision was realized as a result of the donation of enumerable volunteer hours,financial resources and contributions, with only insignificant impact on City budgets; and WHEREAS, with the outpouring of support from volunteers, Car #21 has operated since 1984 and continues to by operated solely by volunteers without cost to the City of Fort Collins. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby recognize 2004 as the Railway Society's 20th continuous year of operation and ask the community to voice its appreciation to the Fort Collins Municipal Railway Society for its efforts in continuing to operate the trolley and wishing them well in the future.
