City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, in 1971 Congresswoman Bella Abzug introduced the first Congressional
resolution officially designating August 26 as Women's Equality Day, and
WHEREAS, women are celebrating the 79th anniversary of the passage of the 19th
Amendment to the United States Constitution which secured the right to vote for all American
women; and
WHEREAS, from the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the Declaration of
Sentiments at Seneca Falls, New York in 1848, it took 72years from the Seneca Falls Convention
to the ratification of the Suffrage Amendment, and
WHEREAS, 79 years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, women still represent
only 9 of 100 members in the Senate and only 58 of 435 members in the House, and
WHEREAS, the Convention to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women, an
international treaty drafted and signed in 1980, has since been ratified by 160 nations, but has
• yet to be ratified by the United States; and
WHEREAS, women look to the courage and determination of our foremothers in the
suffrage movement to find inspiration to overcome the barriers which remain.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim August 26, 2000 as
WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY
in the City of Fort Collins in recognition of the anniversary and as a reminder of women's
continuing efforts for equality.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
Collins this 15th day of August, A.D. 2000.
