PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Latimer Couny lost 32 individuals to suicide in1999, and
WHEREAS, more than 300 people have died by suicide in Latimer Couny over the last ten years; and
WHEREAS,suicide permeates all demographic boundaries and causes extreme suffering,grieving, and pain
that affects families, schools and communities, and
WHEREAS, many of the social, demographic, biological, clinical, and behavioral risk factors for suicide are
known, and many promising strategies exist to prevent suicide, and
WHEREAS, the riskforhuman selfdestruction can be reduced through awareness, education and treatment
making it necessary to regard suicide as a major health problem and to support educational programs, research
projects, and services providing support and resources to those who have lost a loved one to suicide, and
WHEREAS, the Suicide Resource Center's mission is to develop, coordinate, and implement suicide
9prevention, education, intervention, and postvention services in the communities of Latimer Coun y; and
WHEREAS, events and presentations are planned far thefirst week of May to help educate Latimer County
residents about suicide and promote awareness of available resources.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the Ciy of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the week
of May 7-13, 2000 as
SUICIDE AWARENESS WEEK
in the city of Fort Collins.
