PROCLAMATION
City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS, mental health is critical for the well-being and vitaliy of ourfamilies, businesses, and
the communiy; and
WHEREAS, mental illness will strike one in five Americans (that is, 22,580 people in Fort
Collins) in a given year regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or economic status; and
WHEREAS, one in five children suffers from a diagnosable mental or emotional disorder, and one
in ten has a serious disorder which, if untreated, can lead to school failure, addiction, and even suicide, and
WHEREAS, mental disorders, collectively, make mental illness the most prevalent health problem
in America today — more common than cancer, lung, and heart disease combined; and
WHEREAS, the guiding principles of communiy mental healthcare have always been
comprehensiveness, cost-efficiency, effective management, and high-quality and consumer-responsive services,
and those principles are now being adopted by private and public healthcare payors; and
WHEREAS, the Larimer Center for Mental Health, Mountain Crest Behavioral Health Center,
the Larimer County Alliance far the Mentally Ill, the Suicide Resource Center, the Poudre Health Service
District and their partners observe Mental Health Awareness Month each year in May to raise awareness
Of mental health, mental illnesses, and the stigma associated with it.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the Ciy of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the
month of May as
MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
in the city of Fort Collins and call upon all citizens, government officials, and agencies in Fort Collins to
recommit our resources to increase awareness and understanding of mental illnesses and the need for
appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.
