RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends adoption of the Resolution. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: A vacancy currently exists on the Affordable Housing Board due to the resignation of Buster Davis. Councilmembers Wanner and Bertschy reviewed the applications on file and are recommending Christopher Shearer to fill the vacancy with a term to begin immediately and set to expire on June 30, 2003. Three vacancies also exist on the Commission on Disability due to the resignations of Stacey Abate, Nathan Montgomery and Lila Vizzard. Applications were solicited and Councilmembers Byrne and Martinez conducted interviews and are recommending Susan Williams and Romla Fritz to fill two of the vacancies with a term to begin immediately and set to expire on June 30, 2001 and June 30, 2002 respectively. The Council interview team is also recommending Kathryn Johnson to fill the third vacancy with a term to being May 1, 2000 and set to expire on June 30, 2003. i RESOLUTION 2000-46 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS MAKING APPOINTMENTS TO THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING BOARD AND THE COMMISSION ON DISABILITY WHEREAS, a vacancy currently exists on the Affordable Housing Board due to the resignation of Buster Davis; and WHEREAS, three vacancies also exist on the Commission on Disability due to the resignations of Stacey Avate,Nathan Montgomery and Lila Vizzard.. I would like help the community become more aware of the needs of the disabled in general, and of people suffering from post polio syndrome in particular, and facilitate government and businesses in making reasonable accommodations that will allow all disabled people to be as independent as nrrble. efly explain what You believe are the three most important issues facina this board or commission, and how do you believe this board or commission should address each issue? 1) Awareness of the special needs of various disabled groups (for example, the prime need for post polios is proximity to facilities, since fatigue is a major symptom). 2) Making handicap accessibility more than just a token gesture (for example, a fishing area marked °handicap accessible' that has a long, deep-gravel path going over a dam,then very steep-sloped banks going down to the lake). 3) Helping people to become more responsible in honoring handicapped parking places (for example, businesses taking up handicapped parking for special activities or for storing construction equipment, or delivery people parking in these spaces). These issues need to be addressed with education and with dialog. The commission should seek out as much input from various disabled groups as possible, then translate the needs that are identified into public information programs that will educate citizens as to what the needs are and why. List any abilities, skills, licenses. certificates, specialized training, or interests you have which are applicable to this board or commission: My interest in this commission stems from the fact that my husband found out three years ago that he had polio as a child, and he is now suffering from post polio syndrome. He uses either Canadian crutches, a wheel chair, or an electric cart for mobility. I have learned a lot about the need for these and other assistive devices, and I can see that while the community has made some great strides in meeting some of the needs of the disabled, there are many areas which still need to be addressed.
