City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 17 men have been victims of sexual assault in the State of Colorado; and
WHEREAS,every sexual assault which occurs in our own community affects every person in Fort Collins, whether as a victim survivor
or as a family member, loved one,friend, neighbor or co-worker of a victim survivor; and
WHEREAS,citizens of Fort Collins work to provide quality services and assistance to sexual assault survivors;and dedicated volunteers
staff the 24-hour Sexual Violence/Rape Crisis Hotline; and professionals join with volunteers to respond to emergency calls which offer
support, comfort, and advocacy throughout all stages of the recovery process, including medical examinations, criminal proceedings, and
throughout the entire healing process; and
WHEREAS, professionals and volunteers affiliated with the Lorimer County Sexual Assault Resource Team(SART)member agencies
are promotingprevention education opportunities by offering training to schools,churches and civic organizations,as well as medical,mental
health, law enforcement, education, and criminal justice personnel regarding sexual assault issues; and
WHEREAS,it is vitally important that continued educational efforts to provide information to our citizenry about prevention,and services
available to victim survivors which improve our community response to sexual assault be supported and enhanced; and
WHEREAS,it is cridcal to intensify public awareness of sexual assault, to educate people about the need for citizen involvement in efforts
to reduce sexual violence, to increase support for agencies providing sexual assault services,and to increase awareness of the healing power
of creative expression; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Collins Police Department Victim Services Team, Sexual Assault Victim Advocate Program(SAVA), Colorado
State University Victim Assistance Team and other agencies comprising the Sexual Assault Resource Team(SART) of Larimer County
requests public support and assistance as work continues toward creating a society where all women, children and men can live in peace,
free from violence and exploitation.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the month of April, 2004 as
SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
in the city of Fort Collins and recommend this observance to all citizens.
