HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 05/18/2004 - PROCLAMATION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY AS ''MUL Mayor 6a City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is thought to be an autoimmune disease where the body's defense system attacks myelin, the fatty substance that surrounds and protects the nerve fibers of the brain, optic nerves and spinal cord;the damaged myelin mayform scar tissue(sclerosis)and often, the nervefiber is also damaged thus nerve impulses to and from the brain are distorted or interrupted; and WHEREAS,MS is not a fatal disease; individuals with MS have near normal life expectancies and most people with MS learn to cope with the disease and live full,productive lives; and WHEREAS, the symptoms of MS may include tingling, numbness,pain, slurred speech, blurred or double vision, muscle weakness,poor balance,fatigue and forget(ulness, among others; and WHEREAS,MSis an unpredictable disease with symptoms varyinggreatlyfrom person toperson and varying over time in the same person; and WHEREAS, Colorado has one of the highest rates of MS in the country, with 1 in 650, compared,for example, to 1 in 10,000 in Texas. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim May 2004 as MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AWARENESS MONTH in the city of Fort Collins.
