HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 09/05/2000 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING SEPTEMBER 11-15, 2000 AS TR Mayor 4,a City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, increased public investment in transit services provides the potential to create jobs and enhance business prosperity, and WHEREAS, public transportation is vital to the quality of life and economic well-being of the citizens of Fort Collins, Colorado; and WHEREAS, workers, school children, senior citizens, people with disabilities, college students, and those unable to afford an automobile use public transportation to gain access to jobs, schools, medical facilities, and other fundamental services; and WHEREAS, the nation, our communities, and our citizens face the risks to health and the environment that are brought on by automobile exhaust emissions; and WHEREAS, traffic congestion that wastes productive time can be alleviated through the increased availability and use of public transportation and other forms of high-occupancy, shared-ride services, and WHEREAS, theAmerican Public Transportation Association, the U.S.Department ofTransportation, the Federal Transit Administration, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Association for Commuter Transportation, the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations, the National Association of Counties, .Community Transportation Association of America, the National League of Cities, the National Governor's Association, the Surface Transportation Policy Project, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, have declared September 11- 15, 2000 to be TRY TRANSIT WEEK and have called upon all citizens to join in a nationwide effort to promote transit's benefits, honor transit employee, and encourage new riders. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the week of Septemberl1-15, 2000 as TRY TRANSFORT WEEK in the city of Fort Collins and encourage citizens to examine their personal travel choices, to commute via transit or share the ride during TRY TRANSFORT WEED and to become more active in education and advocacy efforts to promote the vital role of public transit in Fort Collins, Colorado and across the United States.
