HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 09/05/2000 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING SEPTEMBER 17-23, 2000 AS HO Mayor City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, across the United States, even in times of prosperity and thriving economy, the homeless population continues to grow with over 700,000 people homeless on a given night and up to 2 million people experiencing homelessness in a given year, and WHEREAS, in 1999 there were more than 1,800 individuals and families, in Fort Collins, who were homeless at some point during theyear and over 5,400 living in an unstable housing situation; and WHEREAS, the fastest growing segment of the homeless population continues to be families with children, representing over 40 percent of the homeless population; and WHEREAS, many citizens misunderstand the true causes and factors related to homelessness in this day and age; and WHEREAS, the Comprehensive Homeless Assistance Team (CHAT) of Latimer County is comprised of private, public and governmental agencies and organizations that both serve the homeless and • strive to educate the citizenry about the true issue, its effect on individuals,families and communities and to "change the face of homelessness". NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17-23, 2000 as HOMELESS ORGANIZATIONS FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION (HOPE) WEEK in the city of Fort Collins and ask the community to participate in this week of education about and advocacy far the homeless population by supporting the efforts of the CHAT and its work to break the cycle of homelessness.
