PROCLAMATION
City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS, vision loss is the third leading cause of disability in the United States; and
WHEREAS, irreversible vision loss is most common among people over age 65; and
WHEREAS, vision impairment has many causes. Some of the most common causes of
visual loss are degenerative eye diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic
retinopathy and in most cases, there are no medical treatments that will bring vision back; and
WHEREAS, low vision means that even with regular glasses, contact lenses, medicine
or surgery, people find everyday tasks such as reading the mail, shopping, cooking, seeing the
television, and writing can be challenging and difficult to do; and
WHEREAS, since 2001, the Ensight Skills Center, a non-profit organization funded
through grants and supported by the Fort Collins Lion's Club, has had the mission to provide
clients with low vision the opportunity to enhance their life skills, independence and
self-confidence in a safe environment through adaptive technology and training and to empower
their clients to live independently; and
WHEREAS, a community breakfast will be held on February 26, 2008 at 7:15 a.m. at
the Fort Collins Marriott for citizens to discover how their support will enable the Ensight Skills
Center to empower independent living for the low-vision community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do
hereby proclaim the month of February 2008 as
"LOW VISION AWARENESS MONTH"
in the city of Fort Collins.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
