PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS,Fort Collins recognizes and respects individual strengths and dii f erences;and
WHEREAS, symbolic gestures, which visually demonstrate the importance of valuing
people of all cultures, all ethnic groups, all races and all abilities, heighten awareness; and
WHEREAS, on February 23 Different Shoe Day will be celebrated in an effort to spread
positive feelings ofgood will and mutual respect in a way in which all members of the community
at all age levels can participate; and
WHEREAS, the Girls Scouts of the United States ofAmerica actively promotes pluralism,
or the beliefthat it is socially beneficial for numerous distinct ethnic, religious, and cultural groups
to be present and accepted within a society; and
WHEREAS,Different Shoe Day has been endorsed by The Character Council of Greater
Fort Collins, with regard to the fact that its mission is to strengthen the citizens, theirfamilies, and
the community as a whole by promoting excellence in character.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez,Mayor of the City of Fort Collins,do hereby proclaim
February 23, 2004 as
DIFFERENT SHOE DAY
in the city of Fort Collins and encourage all citizens to wear two different shoes on February 23 in order to
take a step in the right direction toward a commitment to embrace all peoples.
