HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - AGENDA ITEM - 12/16/2003 - SECOND READING OF ORDINANCE NO. 170, 2003, AMENDIN ITEM NUMBER 10 AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY DATE December 16, 2003 FORT COLLINS CITY COUNCIL STAFF John Fischbach SUBJECT Second Reading of Ordinance No 170 2003, Amending Section 2-575 of the City Code Relating to Councilmember Compensation RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on Second Reading EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Article H Section 3 of the City Charter provides that the compensation of Councilmembers shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index In 2003 Councilmembers were compensated $585 per month, and the Mayor received $880 per month This Ordinance which was unanimously adopted on First Reading on December 2 2003, amends Section 2 575 of the City Code to set the 2004 compensation of Councilmembers at $595 and the compensation of the Mayor at$895 as required by the City Charter ORDINANCE NO 170 2003 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS AMENDING SECTION 2-575 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS RELATING TO COUNCILMEMBER COMPENSATION WHEREAS on April 8 1997 the electorate of the City approved certain amendments to the City Charter and WHEREAS one such amendment was an amendment to Article II Section 3 of the City Charter pertaining to the compensation of Councilmembers and WHEREAS Article II,Section 3 of the City Charter as amended,provides that commencing in 1998 the amounts of compensation of the Mayor and Councilmembers shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index (est to be 2 1%) and WHEREAS the history of Council compensation since the first adjustment for inflation was made is as follows Year Mayor Councdmember 1999 $770 $515 2000 $790 $525 2001 $825 $550 2002 $860 $575 2003 $880 $585 and WHEREAS after applying the foregoing inflation factor for the year 2003 the amount of compensation for the Mayor for 2004 should be eight hundred ninety-five dollars ($895 00) per month and for other Councilmembers five hundred ninety five dollars ($595 00) per month NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS that Section 2-575 of the Code of the City of Fort Collins be and hereby is amended to read as follows Sec 2 575 Compensation of City Councilmembers Commencing January 1 2003 the compensation for all Councilmembers except the Mayor shall be five hundred ninety-five dollars ($595 ) per month and the compensation of the Mayor shall be eight hundred ninety-five dollars ($895 ) per month These amounts shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the DenverBoulder Consumer Price Index Introduced considered favorably on first reading and ordered published this 2nd day of December A D 2003 and to be presented for final passage on the h day of December A D I 2003 Mayor ATTEST Chief Deputy City Clerk Passed and adopted on final reading this 16th day of December A D 2003 Mayor ATTEST City Clerk ITEM NUMBER 17 AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY DATE December2, 2003 FORT COLLINS CITY COUNCIL STAFF John Fischbach SUBJECT First Reading of Ordinance No 170 2003 Amending Section 2-575 of the City Code Relating to Councilmember Compensation M RECOMMENDATION A Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on First Reading EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Article II Section 3 of the City Charter provides that the compensation of Councilmembers shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index In 2003 Councilmembers wer compen e e anti the Mayor received $880 per month This Ordinance amends Sectic 75'of the City Cod set the 2004 compensation of Councilmembers at $595 and the compensation of the Mayor at $895 as required by the City Charter BACKGROUND At the April 8 1997 election, the electorate of the City of Fort Collins approved an amendment to the City Charter setting the m(the nsaf riC unci meuers and the Mayor at $500 and $750 respectively In addrtioh�r am ddde anguage requmng the amounts of Council compensation to be anngly fpr lie yaeon in a ordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index The history of Councifcompensation since the first adjustment for inflation was made is as follows Year Mayor Councilmember 1999 $770 $515 2000 $790 $525 2001 $825 $550 2002 $860 $575 2003 $880 $585 The 2004 compensation amounts adjusted for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index are$595 per month for Councilmembers and$895 per month for the Mayor
