Second Reading of Ordinance No. 171, 2000, Amending Section 2-575 of the City Code Relating
to Councilmember Compensation.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on Second Reading.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Article II, Section 3 of the City Charter provides that the compensation of Councilmembers shall be
adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index. In
2000,Councilmembers were compensated$525 per month,and the Mayor received$790 per month.
Ordinance No. 171,2000,which was unanimously adopted on First Reading on November 21,2000,
amends Section 2-575 of the City Code to set the 2001 compensation of Councilmembers at $550
and the compensation of the Mayor at$825.

This Ordinance amends Secti•rt57 e Cod set the 2001 compensation of
Councilmembers at $550 and the compensation of the Mayor at $825.
BACKGROUND:
At the April 8, 1997 election, the electorate of the City of Fort Collins approved an amendment to
the City Charter setting the monthly compensation of Councilmembers and the Mayor at$500 and
$750, respectively. In addition, the Charter amendment added language requiring the amounts of
Council compensation to be adju annu or' o cc ance with the Denver/Boulder
Consumer Price Index. In Dec ber Cou i] op d i nce No. 180, 1999,setting 1999
monthly compensation amou at $52 or Co c bers d $790 for the Mayor.
The 2000 compensation amounts, adjusted for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder
Consumer Price Index are$550 per month for Councilmembers and$825 per month for the Mayor.
