HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 10/03/2000 - PROCLAMATION PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 14, 2000 AS WHITE Aity of Fort Collins Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the white cane is bath a simple tool and a powerful symbol; and WHEREAS,for people who are blind or visually impaired, it can be the key to greater mobility, giving them information about their surroundings and allowing them to travel safely whether crossing the street or crossing the country; and WHEREAS,for those who are sighted, the white cane shows that blind or visually impaired people have the abiliy, the desire, and the right to participate in every aspect of life; and WHEREAS,for all of us, the white cane symbolizes the independence every citizen needs and deserves if he or she is to contribute fully to society; and WHEREAS, on October 6, 1964, Congress designated October 15 of each year as "White Cane Safety Day" to honor the many achievements of blind and visually impaired citizens and to recognize the white cane's significance in advancing independence; and WHEREAS, local Lions Clubs promote "IVhite Cane Safety Day"in the spring and fall each year and the American Council of the Blind of Colorado and local Lions Clubs will be seeking donations for white cane lapel pins at area supermarkets on October 14 in an effort to raise funds for projects benefitting the local blind community. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim October 14, 2000, as WHITE CANE SAFETYDAY in the city of Fort Collins and encourage the citizens to observe this day by participating in the event sponsored by the American Council of the Blind and Lions Club members.
