RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on First Reading. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Article 11,Section 3 of the City Charter provides that the compensation of Councilmembers shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index. In 2000,Councilmembers were compensated$525 per month,and the Mayor received$790 per month. lipThis Ordinance amends Section 2-575 of the City Code to set the 2000 compensation of Councilmembers at$550 and the compensation of the Mayor at $825. BACKGROUND: At the April 8, 1997 election, the electorate of the City of Fort Collins approved an amendment to the City Charter setting the monthly compensation of Councilmembers and the Mayor at$500 and $750, respectively. In addition, the Charter amendment added language requiring the amounts of Council compensation to be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index. In December 1999,Council adopted Ordinance No. 180, 1999,setting 1999 monthly compensation amounts at $525 for Councilmembers and $790 for the Mayor. The 2000 compensation amounts, adjusted for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index are$550 per month for Councilmembers and$825 per month for the Mayor. . ORDINANCE NO. 171, 2000 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS AMENDING SECTION 2-575 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS RELATING TO COUNCILMEMBER COMPENSATION WHEREAS,on April 8, 1997,the electorate of the City approved certain amendments to the City Charter; and WHEREAS, one such amendment was an amendment to Article II, Section 3 of the City Charter, pertaining to the compensation of Councilmembers; and WHEREAS,Article II,Section 3 of the City Charter,as amended,provides that,commencing in 1998, the compensation of Councilmembers, except the Mayor, shall be five hundred dollars ($500)per month and the compensation of the Mayor shall be seven hundred fifty dollars($750)per month; and WHEREAS, Article II, Section 3 of the City Charter also provides that the amounts of compensation of the Mayor and Councilmembers shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index; and WHEREAS, in December 1998,Council adopted Ordinance No. 233, 1998 which added a section to the City Code relating to Council compensation and which, after applying the foregoing inflation factor, set the amount of compensation for the Mayor for 1999 at seven hundred seventy dollars ($770) per month, and for other Councilmembers, five hundred fifteen dollars ($515) per month; and WHEREAS, in December 1999, Council adopted Ordinance No 180, 1999, setting the amount of compensation for the Mayor for 2000 at Seven Hundred Ninety dollars($790)per month, and for other Councilmembers at Five Hundred Twenty-Five dollars ($525) per month; and WHEREAS,after again applying the foregoing inflation factor for the year 2001,the amount of compensation for the Mayor for 2001 should be Eight Hundred Twenty-five dollars ($825) per month, and for other Councilmembers, Five Hundred Fifty dollars ($550)per month. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS that Section 2-575 of the Code of the City of Fort Collins be, and hereby is, amended to read as follows: Sec. 2-575. Compensation of City Council members. Commencing January 1, 206620()1, the compensation for all Councilmembers except the Mayor shall be five hundred twenty-five dollars ($525 ) per month and the compensation of the Mayor shall be .. dollars($396-$25?�)per month. These amounts shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index.
