voted unanimously to recommend designation of this building as a landmark for its architectural and
historical significance to Fort Collins.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The owner of the property, The Whole Life Church of Religious Science, is initiating this request
for Fort Collins Landmark designation for the Historic Seventh Day Adventist Church. The
property is individually eligible for landmark designation under City of Fort Collins Landmark
Preservation Standards(1)-Association with events that have made a significant contribution to the
broad patterns of history; and (3) - Embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or
method of construction.
Significance and Physical Integrity: The church building at 400 Whedbee Street has made a
significant contribution to our history under Standard 1, for its construction and its use, for over a
century, as a church. The building is also significant under Standard 3, for its architectural merits.
It is a very well preserved and noteworthy example of an early church in Fort Collins, with a
stylistically austere design. The property is a contributing element of the Laurel School National
Register District. In 1998, it was assessed as being individually eligible for designation on the
National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C,as an excellent example of early 20'century
small scale church architecture.
The church, located on the southeast corner of Whedbee and East Magnolia Streets,is a single story,
wood frame, cross gable vernacular building. Costing $1600 to construct, the building is
distinguished by its high walls, relatively steeply pitched gables, and lack of ornamentation. Walls
are clad with narrow drop siding, and large gables facing front and north each contain triple sets of
tall 1-over-1 windows separated by wide mullions. These windows also feature flat wooden
surrounds and stepped molding lintels. On the south elevation is a canted bay window. The main
entry is accessed by a small open porch, protected by a substantial shed roof supported by a turned
spindle post.
December 2, 2003 -2- Item No. 19
Designed by Ora E. Long, this church was erected in 1903 for the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
The Seventh Day congregation in Fort Collins was organized on February 5, 1887; at the time, it
consisted of only twelve members, led by Elder J. D. Pegg. Watson Ziegler took charge of the
congregation around 1896, and this church was built under his stewardship. The church at 400
Whedbee served the congregation until 1954, when a new Seventh Day Adventist Church was
constructed at 502 East Pitkin Street. On March 5, 1954, The Glad Tidings Assembly of God
acquired the church property for$15,000. This church utilized the building until the property was
sold in 1973. Shortly thereafter, Glad Tidings changed its name to Foothills Assembly of God
Church, and moved to its new location at 305 West Swallow Road. This building then became home
to The Downtown Church of Christ, who owned the church from 1974 and 1982. In February 1982,
the property was sold to the Mennonite Fellowship Church for$56,900. In 2002, the Mennonites
sold the land to the William J. Warren Trust for $180,000. Later that year, the Trust sold the
property to the Whole Life Church of Religious Science for$210,000. In the last year, the Whole
Life Church has restored much of the building's original wood interior, repairing the wear that
comes with a century of use.

Seventh-day Adventists
by
Mary Alice Darnell Bauer
for
HY610A
Prof. Leyendecker
The Seventh-Day Adventist , the Christian Scientists, and the
Shakers were three home-grown American sects founded by women
during the nineteenth century. The Adventists and the Christian
Scientists are still thriving today. Ellen G. White, the
founder of Seventh-Day Adventists, was most influenced by
William Miller's message announcing the Immanent second coming
of Christ predicted for sometime between October 22, 1843 and
October 22, 1844, by Sabbatarlans who believed in keeping the
Sabbath on Saturday Instead of Sunday, and by the health reform
movement . She believed that the second coming was still
Immanent although the October, 22, 1844 date had passed. Christ
had ,just withdrawn Into the holiest part of heaven . before He
returned. Believers had a brief respite In which to prepare and
to spread the good word. A large part of Ellen White's visions
concerned matters of life-style and health. They rejected much
of orthodox medical practice, especially the use of vegetable
or mineral drugs or other heroic treatments, and endorsed
hydropathy, or water cure. She advocated a vegetarian diet
along the lines of that proposed by Sylvester Graham. One
widespread aspect of modern life which is an outgrowth of the
movement is the modern breakfast cereal pioneered by John
Kellogg, an adventist physician and close associate until he
was expelled around 1900. It was he, along with his brother ,
Will Keith , who created Granola and cornflakes. White also
condemned the use of alcohol , tobacco, tea and coffee . The
Adventists and the Mormons were the only Christian sects to
1
condemn all four as a matter of faith . These life-style changes
were severe challenges for many, if not most , Adventists
Including Ellen White herself . She did not give up meat totally
until the 1890's. However , she was totally unsuccessful In
implementing her visions concerning female dress reform. She
advocated, based on her visions, a modified "Bloomer" costume
the skirt of which would clear the ground by only nine inches
and which had pants. Most Adventist women resisted the new
dress and those who tried to adopt It met serious resistance
from family and community.
Ellen White and her group of Adventists had been active
since 1844. In 1860 they formally organized as a separate and
distinct church taking the name 'Seventh-day Adventist . ' The
first Adventist in Colorado was a sixteen year old girl who
came to Denver by covered wagon in the early 1860's. After
working as a maid for a rich miner she married another miner
named Shaw and moved with him to Golden . Ellen White and her
husband, James, came to Colorado for his health in 1872 and met
the Shaws at that time. They were convinced that Mrs. Shaw was
an Adventist and was the only one In the state. In 1873 they
visited the Shaw's again accompanied by a Mr. D.M. Canright who
held a series of meetings: the first recorded Adventist
meetings held in Colorado. Mr. Shaw and several others were
converted. The Colorado Conference was organized in 1882.
In 1886 the Colorado Conference sent Mr. J.D. Pegg to Fort
Collins to hold tent meetings. During this effort ten people
2
were baptized, a Sabbath school of 30 was organized, $5.00
worth of books were sold, and contributions totaling $65.00
collected. On February 5 of the following year twelve charter
members organized the Fort Collins church and signed the
following covenant : "We the undersigned hereby associate
ourselves together as a church , taking the name Seventh-day
Adventists and covenanting to keep the commandments of God and
the Faith of Jesus. " Mr . W.H. Workman opened his home at 317 E.
Mulberry St . for services and Mrs. Minda Sickman Keck offered
her home at 605 S. College for Sabbath School Classes. A few
years later the first church was built at Olive and Whedbee by
Mr. W.H. Campbell and others. The congregation quickly outgrew
this church.
They bought a church in the 200 block of E. Mountain Avenue
from the Methodists who also were looking for larger quarters.
H.W. Heck was the first pastor. The old church was sold to
Robert Leonard who remodeled it into a dwelling. The new church
provided enough space for a school which was started with
fifteen school age children, with Charles Clemens as teacher.
However, the parents soon came to the conclusion that the city
was not a desirable place for a school and plans were begun to
relocate . The new site was at Magnolia and Whedbee where they
completed the building by 1906. The 1901 Sandborn maps for Fort
Collins omit the structure but the one for 1906 includes It.
This is the structure featured in the walking tour . The first
pastor was Elder Watson Ziegler who Instructed the trustees to
3
deed the property to the Colorado Conference In 1909. They also
voted to sell ninety feet of the lot east of the church for a
minimum of 400 .00 to pay for such improvements as sidewalks,
electric lights, a furnace, hitching posts and landscaping. The
land did not sell and many of the improvements were not made
for several years. The Sandborn maps indicate that the church
still had coal oil lamps in 1925.
This church served a growing congregation until 1955.
Membership Increased from 65 to 156 between 1911 and 1955 while
the tithes collected rose from around 330 to Just over 20,500 .
Adventists were traditionally interested in mission work and
offerings for missions rose from Just over 200 to little better
than 4,200 . By 1943 the church had become too crowded and a few
members of the congregation began to put money aside for a new
one . One of those members bought a lot and held it until
sufficient funds were accumulated. for a new building. The
fund-raising began in ernest In 1953. The women raised about
2000 themselves by baking rolls, cakes, pies and bread which
they sold through the Safeway store on College Avenue. The old
church was finally sold to Glad Tidings Assembly of God for
15,000 and on September 24, 1954 the last sermon was preached.

HISTORY OF THE FORT COLLINS ADVENTIST CHURCH
December 1, 1956
To better understand the history of the Fort Collins Adventist
Church one should learn how the Adventist first entered the state
of Colorado.
is The first Seventh-day Adventist to locate in Colorado was
probably a sixteen year old girl who came across the plains of
Kansas and Colorado to Denver in a covered wagon, and went. to work
as a maid for a 'rich miner in that city in the early sixties,, She
was united in marriage a little later with one, Mr. Shaw a miners,
and they made their home in Golden, Colorado. when Mr, and Mrs,
James white, two great leaders in the Advent Cause# came to Corlorado
in 1872 for his health# they learned of this family in which the
wife was the only Adventist and they visited with her and satisfied
themselves that she was the only Adventist in the state. In 1876
they were again in Colorado for a vacation and visited this home and
also invited Mr. D. M. Canright to join them. Mr. Canright spent
some time in the Shaw home. He helped Mr. Shaw build- :.a barn and
also held a series of meetings in a schoolhouse. Mr. Shaw accepted
the Adventist faith, as did a few others, This was the first
preaching done in the state by Adventists . No further public work
was done until 1878, The Colorado Conference was organized in 1882
and the first eight years of its existence added a number of
churches and gave momentum to the Advent Cause in Colorado.
Colorado was# by this time, not only a gold mining state, but an
agricultural and cattle grazing state, and so during, the eighties
Adventism spread over the mountains and thru the valleys and reached
out from the cities into the agricultual and cattle grazing district
of the state. They organized a number of new churches, established
mission in Denver, maintained a tract society in the same city,
" and equipped large numbers of oolpdrteurs with Adventist literature
which they sold far and near throughout the state. General camp.
meetings were also held from year to year.
During the summer of 1886 the Colorado Conference sent an
evangelist$ Mr. J. D. Pegg to Fort Collins to hold a tent effort*
He wrote that he had baptised ten persons and that a Sabbath School
of thirty had been organized. He sold $65 ,00 worth of books #nd the
evening collections had also amounted to $66.00 and in all Adventist
homes he had taken a subscription for the denominational paper„
The Review and. Herald.
The next spring on February 5, 1887 twelve Charter members
signed the following covenant: "We the undersigned hereby associate
ourselves together as a church, taking the name Seventh day Adventists
and oovenanting to keep the commandments of God and the Faith of
Jesus" . The newly organized church had no meeting place so Mr. W.
H• Workman opened his home at 317 E. Mulberry St. .for church services,
and Mrs. Minds, Sickman Keeks her home at 605 So. College Ave.,,
where Dr. Beebe's office now stands, for Sabbath School Classes.
In the early days money was searces but after several months
a small church was erected on the corner of Olive and Whedbee streets .
Mrs, Lila Armitage, then only a child, remembers well attending
this church which her father W. H. Campbell helped to build. There
were missionary minded people in those days, too-- the name of one,
Mrs. Mary Cook, appears on the record. Her son Robert Cook and
family, with Elder Votaw, spent several years in Burma spreading
the good news of salvation.
The congregation very soon outgrew its modest little church
home and looked for more spacious quarters . Fortunately ju$t ,at,;.
that time, the Methodists were needing a larger building, so sold
their church located in the 200 block on East Mountain ,Avenue to
the Adventists. Later on the first building was purchased by
Mr, Robert Leonard who remodeled it into a dwelling which is still '
standing.
Seventh-day Adventists, from the early days of their organization,
have sacrificed in order to give their children a Christian education.
The Fort Collins church in this respect was no exception. Since .
this church was spaoiousy and there were about fifteen children of
school age, a church school was started with Charles Clemens as
teacher. Lila Campbell Armitage remembers attending this school.
with four of the Clemens children, . Edward Hurzler, Ida Prickbaum '
and Lillian Dawkins,
Fathers and mothers soon reaci.,ed the conclusion that the city
was a most undesirable place for a school and plans. wers promptly
on foot for a change of location, hots at Whedbee and Nagnblia
were purchased and. a new church building started. and completed
sometime within a few years. after the turn of the century, Elder
Watson Ziegler was the first pastor.
On January 3, 1909 Elder Ziegler instructed the trustees of
the church to deed the church property to the Colorado Conference.
At that time 1t was voted to sell 100 ft. of the lot east of the
church for not less than $400.00 to cover the cost of sidewalkap
electric lights, a furnace, hitching posts and landscaping. Since;
there was no. sale for the lot# the church members had to forgo the
pleasure of a well lighted and properly heet.ed auditorium for
several years .
Mrs . Ermol Meyer who has had a continuous membership in the
Fort Collins Adventist Church since 1920, tells of the improVements
3
made during the leadership of Elder C . 2, Grant, she said that
the members rallied to the task begore them of painting and
redecorating the building, wiring for electric lights, installing
a .furnace and buying a piano; financing the projeot mostly with
food sales. Elder Grant worked tirelessly for days excavating
part of the church basement making a large room where school could
be held.
It would be quite impossible in this history to take time to
tell all of the activities and growth of the Fort Collins Adventist
Church during the past 60 years. Several evangelistio efforts
were held, one of which was a Bible Health Tabernacle conducted
by Elder C. F. Lickey during the summer of 1928s He reported that
it Was. a. good meeting and the tent on Laporte Avenue was filled to
overflowing. Mr. and Mrs. bollard Cozad, Mrs . C. 0. Hilliard's
mother and father, drove 29 miles, every nits in an old open
Model T Ford to assist with the music . Twenty-six persons were
baptized. Other efforts conducted by Elders C. E. Grant,..Donald
Baynes, W. B. Oachs, J. H. Apigian, Clyde herby and Frank Sherril
were all fruitful. Pastors who served during this period werei
Elders Vote, Berry, Kraft, Clemena, Westermeyer.# Carter$ Meissner,
Young, Lauda, Kepkey and our present pastor, R. B. Wing.
At this point it seems fitting to tell how the church came
into possession of an organ. Upon request of their father# just
prior to his death, that something desired and useful be given to
the church from specified funds left by him, Christine Amen,
Katheryn Amen, and Lydia Webber bought and presented a Concert
Grand Hammond organ in memory of their parents, Katheryn and
Peter sohlitt.
The church advanced in membership from 65 in 1911 to 156 4n
4
1955, The amount of tithe paid in 1911 was $356.67; in 1955
it was $20,540.63. Mission offerings in 1911 were $205.89; in
1955 $4,212.03.
The Lordts House that had served the Adventist Church in
Ft. Collins for so many years had had its day. The auditorium
was overcrowded and extensive remodeling necessary to make the
basement adequate for the children' s Sabbath School. As far back
as 1943 a few members began laying aside annually funds for a new
church building. An ideal lot was purchased in a beautiful section
of the city by one of these members, and held until sufficient
funds could be raised to go forward with the project. On July 8,
1944 a building committee of seven was appointed. This group was
to encourage a long range fund raising program. The next Sabbath .
the new church design was presented to the congregation as a whole.
Ten months later the building committee reported $6#500.00 in the
Colorado Conference,
In Nov. 1953 definite plans were laid for a new structure.
Money raising began in earnest. Pledges were made and a device
showing amounts pledged and amounts yet necessary, was placed
before the congregation. The blessings of God were added and much
was accompliahed. Full support was given by the members in work,
money and donated labor. Food sales played no small part in
augmenting the building fund. More than $2,000.00 was raised by
faithful women who every month baked and carried rolls, cakes, pies
and bread to the Safeway store on College Avenue where buyers were .
often already waiting. Gifts and many discounts from people not
of our faith were received with thankful hearts.
About this time# . the old building and°the school house on the
east lot erected by Brother Wn1,/ebber twenty-six years ago, were
F
t
sold to the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church for $151,000.00.
Land was purchased for a new school on West Lake Street and the
first unit of the school completed that fall.
Construction of the new church started with ground breaking
ceremonies on Oct. 31, 1954. The mayor of the city, C. H. Alford
qnd N. C . Peterson, the Colorado Conference president, were among
those who turned a first shovel full of sod. Excavations_ of a
basement and building the foundation walls soon followed. Intent
on their task of building, dependable men and women continued
working faithfully throughout the next summer. God blessed their
efforts abundantly. Construction was completed and Open douse
held on September 20th. Four days later the last Adventist sermon
was preached in the old church.
The following Sabbath the church family met in their new
home for Sabbath School and viorship, service. That morning the
bulletin carried this earnest wish of our pastor* H. B. Wing for
his flook, "May each family and each individual present, and those
who shall come within the doors of this new building, find the
fulfillment of the spiritual needs and longings of the heart" .

Ft. Collins, Colorado
April 10, 1990
J
In 1954 the Seventh Day Adventists Association of Ft. Collins
began construction of a new church building. On 8 September 1954,
the Association sold the old building located at 400 Whedbee to the
Glad Tidings Assembly of God. Verl H. Glendening headed the Congre-
dation which was to occupy this building for the next twenty years.
Their previous place of worship was located at 517 Magnolia, but
need for a larger building forced the move to 400 Whedbee. Prior to
1952 there is no listing in the Ft. Collins City Directory for the
Glad Tidings congregation.
It was not until 12 March 1974, under the leadership of Pastor
Daniel Taylor, that this property was to be sold to the Downtown
Church of Christ. Once again there is no listing in the City Dir-
ectory for the Glad Tidings congregation post 1974 . The Downtown
Church of Christ occupied the church for the next eight years, and
eventually sold the property in 1982.
This brings us to the current occupants, The Ft. Collins Menn-
onite Fellowship, . which purchased the property on 2 March 1982. The
Mennonite congregation is a branch of the Anabaptist sect, which
believes in voluntary baptism and no baptism for infants. This group
of Mennonites first established themselves in the United States
circa 1875. Historically, the Anabaptists have always practiced a
separation of church and state. When the leader of the Anabaptists
in .Zurich Switzerland was willing to allow the state to decide cer-
tain church issues a split among the Anabaptists occurred. This new
group of Anabaptists migrated to the United States, but were not to
establish meetings in Ft. Collins until 1973. Other branches of the
2
Anabaptists are the Hutterites, Amish and loose ties to the Quakers .
The Mennonite children were one of the primary reasons the
church group began to formally organize in 1973. From 1973 until
1982 this organization took the form of congregation meetings in
private residences. Particularly the home of David and Eva Klink
located at 904 Oxford Lane. The fellowship was not yet large enough
to require a church building, but it was to experience a steady
growth during the late 1970 's. Under the leadership of David Ginger-
rich, the Fellowship grew to approximately thirty families by 1982 .
Average attendance during services was close to twenty five people,
and the group saw a need to purchase a permanent house of whorship.
Therefore, they purchased the property located at 400 Whedbee from
the Downtown Church of Christ. This structure remains the Mennonite' s
first and only church building in Ft. Collins. Its dedication took
place of 2pm, on 16 May 1982.
In the beginning, the transient nature of the congregation
called for a shared leadership instead of an ordained minister. Once
the congregation members became permanent residents of the community
a need arose for steady leadership. In 1984, because of growth and
a steady congregation, Willard Stucky became the first ordained pas-
tor of the Ft. Collins Mennonite Fellowship. He retains that position
today, and the church has approximately forty to forty five members
at. each church service.
The Mennonite congregations in the United States have two sep-
arate conference headquarters . One, which serves as the main head-
quarters, is in Elkhart, Indiana. The second, which serves the general
3
Mennonite congregations, is in Newton, Kansas. The Ft. Collins con-
gregation is a dual conference church, which means they are members
of both the Elkhart and Newton conferences. These district confer-
ences are capable of serving the individual congregations . The Ft.
Collins Mennonites belong to both the Rocky Mountain Mennonite Con-
ference and the Western District Conference, also located in Newton,
Kansas. The Greely Mennonites for example are members only of the
Rocky Mountain Conference.
Furthermore, the Ft. Collins congregation is a member of the
Mennonite Central Committee. This organization acts as a service
relief arm for all Mennonite churches in the United States and Ca-
nada and is located in Pennsylvania. They are involved in such ac'=-•
tivities as Ethiopian famine relief, war relief, aiding areas struck
by natural disasters and providing help to St. Croix.
Closer to home, the local congregation's self help group meets
yearly in November. Their goal is to privide help for local groups
or individuals in financial need. An example of their work would be
the selling of art or pottery by local artists, and returning all
profits to the artists_ The congregation also is involved in a vol-
unteer-service, which provides neighborto neighbor- transitional
housing for the lower income families moving into the area.
In addition, by being a member of the Ft. Collins inter-faith
council the local Mennonites are able to participate in a variety
of community projects.
Although Jesus Christ remains the Church 's foundation, the em-
phasis of the Ft. Collins Mennonite Fellowship lies with people
4
rather than a godly figure. Often called the Believer' s Church, one
must fully understand what the church believes and stands for before
being allowed to become a convert. However, conversion is not re-
quired to marry into the faith.
Mennonites have traditionally been a fundamental group similar
to the Amish and Hutterites. Their creed includes banning such prac-
tices as drinking, smoking, dancing and card playing. At first a .
rural agrarian- religion, changes have and are occuring thanks to the
move from farm to city life. The Ft. Collins congregation sees a need
to adapt to the current. lifestyles. However, they still live by their
"more-with-less" practices which include planting native vegetation,
using solar energy and eating simpler foods. Bible study and Sunday
school are still held at the church. The typical service is not
tightly structured and includes prayer, song, meditation led by a
congregation member and a discussion following the service.
As one can see, the Ft. Collins Mennonite Fellowship is dedi-
cated to community service. This is not just a congregation that
gathers to worship God, but one that reaches out to help their fellow
human beings. They are a closer knit group that works in and outside
the communuty to provide help and assistance where it it needed.
They attempt to live out their discipleship and practice their motto
"A Church Committed to Peace and Social Justice" .

nacwrecniwu oPSCR moN: This small and relatively plain church, located on the southeast comer of Whedbee and East
Magnolia Streets,is a single story, wood frame, cross-gabled vernacular building. The building is distinguished by
its high walls, relatively steeply pitched gables, and lack of ornamentation. The walls are clad with narrow drop
siding, painted a stark white. The large gables facing front and north each contain triple sets of tall 1-over-1
windows separated by wide mullions. These and the other windows installed on the church building are framed
flat wooden surrounds with stepped molding lintels. At the junction of the gabled wings on the front(west)side of
the church is a small open porch covered by a substantial shed canopy supported by a turned spindle post. The
porch is accessed by a wide concrete stoop with pipe handrails. The main entry is set into a narrow shed-roofed
vestibule extending to the north end of the building; the wide entry is sealed by modem double doors beneath a
narrow 2-light transom. On the narrow north side of the vestibule is a solitary narrow double hung 1-over-1 light
window. On the south elevation is a canted bay window with narrow 1-over-1 light double hung windows on the
outer facets. Attached to the northeast comer of the side-gabled wing is a shed-roofed vestibule containing the
basement entry vestibule. The front gabled wing extends eastward beyond the side-gabled wing, and on its north
side at the rear of the church is yet another entry. A solitary red brick chimney capped by a galvanized stovepipe
rises from the east slope of the side-gabled wing. The church appears to be in excellent condition.A large grass
lawn extends behind the building, occupying the remainder of the lot.

CONSTRuclioN wsTORv(include description and dates of major additions, alterations,or demolitions): This large wood frame church building
was erected either in 1901 or 1903. The building was lit with coal oil lamps. A building permit was issued on
October 3, 1927 for unspecified"remodeling." In 1938, The sandstone foundation was replaced or strengthened
with cast concrete blocks, and new concrete steps were constructed on the front(west) side. In the following year,
retaining walls were installed(perhaps the church was damaged by flooding). No additions or other major exterir
alterations are evident.

HisromcAL BACKGROUND(discuss important persons and events associated with this building): This simple wood frame church was erected
ca. 1901-1903 on the southeast comer of Whedbee and East Magnolia Street, and has been utilized by a succession
of four different, small congregations from ca. 1903 to 1998. The congregation in Fort Collins was organized on
February 5, 1887; it consisted of only 12 members led by Elder J.D. Pegg, first pastor of the church. Watson
Ziegler took charge of the congregation around 1896. This church was built during Elder Ziegler's leadership,
within three years after the turn of the century. Watson Ziegler served the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 400
Whedbee Street at least until 1911. By the latter year, the membership of the church had grown to 70 members and
63 children enrolled in Sabbath School. The Seventh Day Adventist Church held services in this building from ca.
1901 to 1954. By the early 1940s the congregation was planning for a move to a larger building; the auditorium in
the church building was becoming overcrowded, and extensive remodeling would be necessary to provide adequate
facilities for the Sabbath School. A new church building was erected for the Seventh Day Adventists at 502 East
Pitkin Street, and the last service held in the old church on Whedbee Street happened on September 24, 1954. The
Glad Tidings Assembly of God acquired the church property in 1954 for$15,000. The Glad Tidings church
utilized the building from 1954 to ca. 1973.The Downtown Church of Christ acquired the building in 1975,and
held services here until 1982. In May of 1982, the Mennonite Fellowship Church moved into the building, and has
served its congregation in this location to the present(1998).

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE(briery lustify the significance checked above): This property was considered a contributing element of the
Laurel School Historic District that was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The old
Seventh Day Adventist Church served a relatively small congregation, and does not appear to be associated with
historically important events, patterns of events, or persons. However, it is a very well preserved and noteworthy
example of early church in Fort Collins, with a stylistically austere design that appears to have been inspired by the
ideological principles of this denomination. As an excellent example of early 20th century church architecture
.signed for a small congregation, the Seventh Day Adventist Church is judged to embody architectural
*ficance rendering the property individually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion
L;. It would also qualify for designation as a Local Landmark based upon its architectural quality. The structure
has been an integral part and visual landmark of the Eastside residential area since ca. 1903 and contributes to the
historic architectural character of the neighborhood. For these reasons it would be considered a contributing
element of a potential locally designated historic district encompassing the largely residential Eastside
neighborhood bounded roughly by Remington Street,E. Mulberry Street,E. Mountain Street, and Riverside
Avenue.
