City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS, the FIRST, w is aspiration and Recognition of Science and
Technology, organization and Poudre High School's Alpine Robotics Team 159; and
WHEREAS this week exists to acknowledge the achievements of the alpine Robotics Team,
their ability to share the importance of science and technology and celebrate how much we rely on these
areas of knowledge in every day of our lives; and
WHEREAS, FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen in an effort to inspire generations of
children to participate in problem solving tasks using science and technology and replicating real life
situations; and
WHEREAS, the relationships and lessons that the students learn from their community mentors
and teachers are life long and inspire a commitment to higher education, often in technology areas, that
will prepare students to better our world and community through gracious professionalism; and
WHEREAS in a country ranked 27th and 28th on a global ranking of math and science
respectively, these students acknowledge the importance of such areas and are motivated to increase
awareness and expand education in these fields; and
WHEREAS, this year's task is called "Overdrive" and is a competition where 6 robots compete
on a 54-foot by 26-foot field, racing while throwing a 3.5-foot diameter ball over a rack placed
horizontally across the track.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim March 3-7, 2008 as
NATIONAL FIRST ROBOTICS WEEK
in Fort Collins, and call upon the citizens of the city to recognize the importance of science and
technology, support this team at its competitions on March 28th and 29th at the University of Denver
and the national competition in mid-April in Atlanta, Georgia, and encourage the overall participation of
young men and women in these fields.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins
