City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play a critical role in every
sphere of our nation's life; and
WHEREAS, American women of every age, race, class and ethnic background served as
early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement, not only to
secure their own right of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement,
the emancipation movement, the labor union movement, the fight for education, the modern civil
rights movement and today in the drive for health care for all; and
WHEREAS, despite these contributions the role of American women in history has been
overlooked and undervalued in the body of American history; and
WHEREAS, the transition of Fort Collins from a frontier settlement into a developing
city is rooted in the hard work of countless individuals. Early history books often portray
accounts of the men who "founded" Fort Collins, but less often do women receive equal
recognition. Letters, diaries, pictures, and artifacts reveal that the early female settlers of Fort
Collins were visionaries, business leaders, community builders, free spirits, mothers, and more.
They used courage, good humor, and grace to establish a life for themselves and their families,
while leaving behind many paths that the Fort Collins community still follows today.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do
hereby proclaim the month of March 2008 to be
NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
Collins this 4th day of March, A.D. 2008.
