PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, physicians are prescribing therapeutic massage to complement traditional
medical treatment for illness, injury and pain, and massage therapy has become an important part
Of work-related stress relief and recovery from sports-related injuries; and
WHEREAS, consumers are spending an estimated$3 to $4 billion annually on massage
therapy and more insurance companies are covering the cost; and
WHEREAS, therapeutic massage relieves pain and can benefit people of all ages; and
WHEREAS, research has proved massage helpful in controlling pain, relieving stress,
boosting immune system functioning, and reducing heart rate and blood pressure; and
WHEREAS, benefits of massage therapy have also been studied on people with lower back
pain, migraine headaches, and on AIDS and cancer patients, among others; and
WHEREAS, theAmerican Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), an international 46,000
member professional association for massage therapists, provides consumer and professional
education information on massage and helps consumers and health professionals locate qualified
massage therapists in their area.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim that the week of October 20, 2003 as
NATIONAL MASSAGE THERAPY A RARENESS WEEK
in the city of Fort Collins.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
