RE: January 2, 2019 Work Session Summary: Council Vacancy Interviews
Councilmembers Present: Mayor Troxell, Mayor Pro Tern Horak, Councilmembers Cunniff, Martinez,
Stephens and Summers.
Overview:
Council interviewed eight applicants for the District 1 vacancy. They included:
• Nathaniel Budd
• Danielle Buttke
• E. John Clarke
• Richard Cress
• Jerry Gavaldon
• Susan Gutowsky
• Jessica Hazlett
• Joseph Somodi, III
Formal notice of the interview date of January 2, 2019 was not provided to applicants, although some
of the applicants had been in contact with the City Clerk and were informed of the schedule. Two
applicants were not informed due to a staff oversight; one of the two applicants attended and
participated in the interviews; one did not (Christopher Staten). The day following the work session,
the City Clerk was able to connect with Mr. Staten who confirmed that he did not attend because the
time was not confirmed with him and he had made other plans.
At the January 15, 2019 meeting, Council will work through the selection process and, if there is
majority support for an applicant, will make an appointment by Resolution of the new District 1
Councilmember. Since Mr. Staten did submit an application, Council may still wish to consider his
application at the January 15, 2019 meeting.
