Mayor Russell stated the meeting would proceed by his introduction of the
City Planner, Les Kaplan, who would make preliminary remarks, introduce
the members of the Consultant Team who would also make preliminary remarks,
then it would be open to discussion by the general public, who should direct
questions to ix. Trkla from Barton--Asc'jnan who would be fielding the
questions. .
The lengthy session which followed delt primarily with the use of Mathews
and Remington Street as a bypass to College Avenue.
Mr. Dwight Bower of the Colorado Division of Highways, spoke in detail to the
150-foot and 300-foot radius for turns at the Mathews and Remington loca-
tions and the departments charge to move traffic safely.
Developers of the Sheraton Inn addressed the problems, if Mathews Street
were used in the redesign of the building and the delay. .
Council members Bowling, Wilkinson and Suinn requested that the Staff and
Consultant Team prepare supportive data on the two alternates.
Mayor Russell declared a ten minute recess. Upon reconvening the meeting,
Mayor Russell read the following letter into the record. -
On behalf of the Fort Collins Landmark Commission I would
like to express our feelings about the Mathews St. and Remington
St. bypass concepts.
We strongly urge the Council to use the Mathews St. concept.
At the north end of Remington St. are some of the oldest, and most
charming buildings left in Fort Collins -- the Miller Block, the
Honstein Block and the Howard Block. These, under the Remington
271
St. concept would all have to go. Losing these buildings, we feel,
would be devastating to the historical heritage of'Fort Collins
and in conflict with the purpose of the Fort Collins Landmark
Commission.
lie realize that the decision is a difficult one, but to
destroy part of Fort Collins heritage just two blocks from
where we are rebuilding the Old Fort seems a bit ironic.
Thus, as an historic preservation commission, we feel the
Mathews St. concept is the better choice.

Landmark Commission Member
Mayor Russell further requested, in addition to the data requested of the
Staff for the -Wednesday Evening meeting, that CORAD also have a statement
to present. Council then went into executive session with developers of
the Sheraton Inn, to discuss possible land acquisition.
Councilman Wilkinson made a motion, seconded by Councilman Bowling, to
return to open session. Yeas: Council members Bloom, Bowling, Gray,
Reeves, Russell, Suinn and Wilkinson. Nays: None.
