Councilmember Canonico seconded. Motion passed 2-0-2 Chairman Comments: N/A Summary • Kat Shelby, an architect with TKP Architects and born and raised in Fort Collins, shared her thoughts on urban design and used her thesis as an example of how to bridge art and community in the built environment • Need to consider ways to engage all members of the community so they can see themselves in design decisions Think Tank Item 3-2022 The Future of Community Architecture, Kat Shelby, TKP Architects 2 • Guide to Urban Design o There is a problem in suburbanization o There is a multitude of housing developments and growth o Need to consider how to grow in a way that maintains community character • Solution: Connect to art and nature o Art creates a sense of being and connects us to self and our surroundings o New architecture should fit within the context of the community • Kat’s thesis as an example: 5003 Fine Arts Community o Conduct an urban analysis ▪ Consider walkability and moving towards a 15-minute city ▪ Consider alternative transportation (i.e. bike sharing options) ▪ Review of bike sharing options as well ▪ Have pedestrian, bike and car friendly routes o 5003 will include: ▪ An event center ▪ Art gallery and co-making studios o Key considerations in design include: ▪ Connection to natural areas ▪ Build in ways that maintain neighborhood identity • Other important design factors and considerations: o How quickly should massing occur? o Should growth be limited in certain areas? o Can we create new urbanism pods? o How do we maintain Housing and Business affordability? Q&A/Discussion • Concern about Old Town creep—concern that feel of old town is creeping farther and father— how do you keep neighborhood identity separate from other areas? o Great way to avoid creep is through architecture—building design influences neighborhood identity o Replicate needs and make sure neighborhoods have what they need within their neighborhood area • Art elements can elicit a lot of opinions—how does future of art relate to future of engagement? How do we create a sense of place/belonging? • Best Practices in engaging community in art and architectural elements? o Talk to people—consider all people who live in a community o Artists can see things in different ways—take a new lens • What would something like Kat’s project look like in other areas of Fort Collins that were developed at a different time? o Create more mixed-use development o Create more areas that are walkable/accessible Additional Items • NA Meeting adjourned by Mayor Pro-Tem Francis at 5:03pm 3
