BACKGROUND / DISCUSSION
Public safety is the primary focus of The Howard G. Buffett Foundation’s community-based grantmaking in the
United States. The Foundation partners with local sheriffs’ offices and law enforcement agencies to identify and
address key community public safety concerns. The philanthropic award is designated for the sole purpose of
the purchase and training of a K9.
Fort Collins Police Services currently has five dogs in the K9 Unit, a specialized division consisting of dog/handler
teams. A focus of a K9 Unit is to increase the safety of officers involved on calls and reduce the number of officer
hours spent on calls. It is estimated that each K9 team can save between 800 and 1,000 officer hours per year.
K9 teams respond to violent calls, building searches related to alarms or reports of forced entry, fleeing subjects,
searches for missing, lost, or endangered children or persons, and narcotic calls.
CITY FINANCIAL IMPACTS
This Ordinance will appropriate $10,000 in philanthropic revenue through City Give for Fort Collins Police
Services. The funds have been received and accepted per City Give Administrative and Financial Policy.
