HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 09/21/2021 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING SEPTEMBER 15-OCTOBER 15, 20 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month celebrates the diversity of the Fort Collins community and has been a national observance celebration since 1988 when it was approved by the 100th Congress. The Hispanic/Latinx community of Fort Collins has designated September 15- October 15, 2021 as observance of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Celebration; and WHEREAS, as the largest minority population in Fort Collins, the Latinx community has historically faced cultural and systemic barriers to inclusion and equitable treatment in the City; and WHEREAS, despite such discrimination, Fort Collins is proud to be home to American citizens of Hispanic and Latinx descent, and Hispanic Latinx immigrants who work tirelessly to remove said barriers and advance the cause of equality for all in our community; and WHEREAS, Hispanic/Latinx communities have played an important role in our strength and prosperity in the City of Fort Collins by making the community vibrant, strong, and productive. Their tenacity, energy and leadership are woven into the culture of Fort Collins; and WHEREAS, the City celebrates Hispanic/Latinx community organizations namely the Museo De Las Tres Colonias, which opened in 2004, for sharing the history of Hispanic Sugar Beet workers lives in the Tres Colonies, Education of Hispanic contributions to our Fort Collins Community, and the significant contributions of the sugar beet industry to the Fort Collins community. In October, the Museo will be hosting a month long "Day of the Dead” at the Museo De Las Tres Colonias community altars to honor migrant workers, veterans, and friends and family of Tres Colonias; and WHEREAS, the Fort Collins City Council and staff have committed to make Fort Collins a welcoming community for all citizens, and we recognize there is more work ahead of us. Equality and inclusion are fundamental community values in Fort Collins, ensuring that all residents feel respected, valued and affirmed. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jeni Arndt, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim September 15-October 15, 2021 as HISPANIC/LATINX HERITAGE MONTH in Fort Collins and encourage residents to participate in and to celebrate the cultural riches that our Hispanic community has to offer.
