PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Joe Martinez was honored by Colorado State University Pueblo on June 2, 2021 at
The Markley Family Hall of Champions at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins for his selection to the school’s
2020 Athletics Hall of Fame. He will be presented his inductee plaque on October 23, 2021 during the
school’s homecoming weekend activities.
WHEREAS, after leading Lamar High School to two state football championships in 1954 and
1955, he became the first football All-American at Pueblo Junior College where he earned All-Empire
Conference honors as a two-way player in the backfield on both offense and defense in 1956 and 1957.
WHEREAS, as a two-year starter at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, he assisted the
Rams to 12 wins in 20 games during his career along with playing a role in the Aggies’ 15-14 win over the
University of Colorado in 1958 at Boulder.
WHEREAS, he became a nationally-recognized softball player and earned Amateur Softball
Association All-American honors before being inducted into the Colorado ASA Hall of Fame.
WHEREAS, after graduating as a first-generation college student from Colorado State University
in Fort Collins (B.A., ’62; CERT, ’63), he taught and coached for 30 years in the Poudre School District
where he was honored as the district’s 1989 teacher of the year.
WHEREAS, he started his family in the mid-1950s in Pueblo and raised four daughters with his
wife, a longtime school librarian, and worked for years to complete her degree in music education where
she ultimately graduated along with daughters Beth Martinez Humenik (B.S., ’82; M.S., ’01) and JoLynn
Martinez Troudt (B.S., ’82).
WHEREAS, he has been a supporter of various human service organizations, has been recognized
for his local and regional community service and has been inducted into the Colorado Mexican American
Hall of Fames.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jeni Arndt, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim June
15, 2021 as
JOE MARTINEZ DAY
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins
