HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 04/20/2021 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING THE CITY'S COMMITMENT TO MO PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the monarch butterfly is an iconic North American species whose multigenerational migration to Mexico and back has captured the imagination of millions of North Americans; and WHEREAS, both the western and eastern monarch populations have seen significant declines; and WHEREAS, Fort Collins recognizes that human health ultimately depends on well-functioning ecosystems and that biodiverse regions can better support food production, healthy soil and air quality and can foster healthy connections between humans and wildlife; and WHEREAS, cities, towns and counties have a critical role to play to help save the monarch butterfly, and Fort Collins is striving to become a leader; and WHEREAS, on March 29, 2021, the Mayor signed the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and have officially committed to taking meaningful action to protect the monarch butterfly; and WHEREAS, Fort Collins has committed to the enhancement of urban lands to provide diverse social and ecological opportunities through the Nature in the City program and Natural Areas Department; and WHEREAS, every community member of Fort Collins can make a difference for the monarch by planting native milkweed and nectar plants to provide habitat for the monarch and pollinators in locations where people live, work, learn, play and worship; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the City’s commitment to MONARCH AND POLLINATOR CONSERVATION and encourage our community to work with us on this endeavor.
