The purpose of this item was to provide an update on progress made towards the Council priority to Reimagine Boards and Commissions, based on previous direction, and seek direction on implementation. Staff shared options for Code changes intended to reduce barriers to participation, increase consistency and clarity, and avoid redundancy. General Feedback x Appreciation for work on this Council Priority and for board member commitment x Support for hybrid meetings and increased opportunities for participation through shorter term length options o Consider reserving seats for ex-officio members x Support for additional category of boards (between Advisory and Quasi-judicial) o More work needed on name for new category x Support for maintaining two unexcused absences as grounds for dismissal, but more flexibility needed for excused absences to accommodate personal and family needs of board members x Terms limits should be set at 8 years for all boards and commissions x Review and update recommended name change to Commission on Disabilities prior to first reading x Ongoing work needed on how we measure impact of these changes to confirm that changes are accomplishing what Council intends o Consideration of annual reporting on board and commission metrics x Continue working with underrepresented populations about how to best engage Next Steps x Bring forward ordinances to update City Code x Continue staff-level system improvements and explore future policy options
