HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 10/14/2020 1 City of Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board Minutes Wednesday October 14, 2020 11:30 a.m. Virtual Meeting on Zoom Fort Collins, Colorado Mission: The Senior Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Fort Collins City Council on programs and policies that help aging citizens live full and interesting lives and continue to contribute, participate, and share in the life of the community. I. Call to Order 11:33 am II. Guest introductions (see attendance below) III. Administrative Items a. In Attendance: Myles Crane, Sarah Schilz, David Kovach, Suzanne King, Nancy Luttropp, Deanna O’Connell, Jan Rossi, Greg Wells and Sara Mendez Guests: Jennifer Bennett, Dr. Deana Davolos, Dr. Trish Housley, Amanda Mansfield. Janet Seeley, Cristina Valdes-Smith, Paula Stearns, Mayor ProTem Kristin Stephens, Bard Vostmyer, Dr. Vara Vissa, Uday Vissa, Oakbrook II Apartment residents and Jodi Waterhouse b. September Minutes Approved – motion: D. O’Connell; seconded D. Kovach - unanimous c. Correspondence: 1) 10/14/20 to Fort Collins VOLUNTEER Services program with some suggestions for community outreach and 2) email to Council re. E-Scooter Program Feedback courtesy of SAB member David Kovach d. Public Participation - None IV. SAB Guest Presenters 1) Jodi Waterhouse: Program Manager, CU Anschutz Multidisciplinary Center on Aging- Leads one of the top geriatric programs in the country. Addressed lack of geriatricians for Colorado’s growing older population. The Center does a lot of work trying to promote that Profession. Geriatrics is one of the lowest paid medical careers. CU has partnered with CSU to offer 3rd and 4th year medical schooling at CSU. Spoke about education outreach. Impacts of COVID discussion, educational campaign to reach community to provide information and resources. Jodi indicated she would very much consider partnering with people and organizations in Northern Colorado She also addressed what is not happening in Colorado regarding older adults’ services and resources. Her office works to educate those in government and Governor’s office regarding COVID and other issues impacting older adults. 2) Amanda Mansfield – FC Transportation Planner delivered a pre-Council informative presentation and responded to Board questions regarding the e-scooter share program. SAB Board member David Kovach expressed some reservations about the program which the Board subsequently emailed to both Amanda and City Council. 2 V. Ongoing initiatives City Council’s Six Month Calendar – highlights for SAB were discussed Senior Center Activities – Sara Mendez provided an update Parks & Recs. MasterPlan – Jan Rossi SAB Community Outreach Meetings VI. Neighborhood Livability Activities Super Issues B&C Meeting 9/28 Intergenerational Conversations - Women 10/10- 59 women attended of age groups 15 = 85+ attended – there were zero no shows. Next will be Saturday, Nov 13th. PAFC Community Updates- VII. New Business Cristina Valdes Smith, Fort Collins VOLUNTEER Services, presented information to the Board about the City’s Virtu-Visit program to successfully connect isolated older adults to their family, friends, and the volunteers who wish to serve them. The program will provide participants with no-cost user-friendly digital tablets, skilled tech volunteers to assist with set up and pair participants with community volunteers who are passionately committed to working with older adults and reducing social isolation. UPCOMING EVENTS and OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS SAB recognized the contributions to our community of former SAB Board member Alan Beatty who recently passed.
