HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuman Relations Commission - Minutes - 09/12/2019HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION Regular Meeting September 12, 2019 5:30 – 7:30 pm CIC Room, City Hall, 300 LaPorte Ave., Fort Collins, CO 9/12/2019 – MINUTES Page 1 o CALL TO ORDER o Meeting was called to order by Chairperson Julia Mackewich at 5:33 pm o ROLL CALL o Present: Eva Amason Jean Runyon Colleen Conway Vic Smith Cindy Davis Phil Walker Julia Mackewich o Absent: Sean Dellenbach Wendy True o Staff Present: Christine Macrina, Boards and Commissions Coordinator o Observers: Beth Jaeger Myles Crane, Senior Advisory Board o AGENDA REVIEW o APPROVAL OF MINUTES. o Jean Runyon moved that the 8/8/19 minutes be approved as is. Second by Phil Walker. Vote to approve: 7-0 o PUBLIC PARTICIPATION o None o PRESENTATIONS o Delaney McNally – Intergenerational Conversations. Delaney is a junior at Loveland HS. She founded Generation Connect 4 years ago. Designed to build the gap between youth and elderly populations. Age friendly conversations take place, reducing social isolation and promoting empathy for each other. Generation Connect is partnering with Ft Collins Senior Advisory Board to offer “Let’s Talk” on October 26 from 9-11 am at the Ft Collins Senior Center. Delaney is asking the HRC to support the Intergenerational Conversations o BUDGET REVIEW o Current funds available: $4407.52 o Allocating $1500 for HRC Awards and $1500 for HRC Facilitator Training HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING: 9/12/19 9/12/2019 – MINUTES Page 2 o NEW BUSINESS o None o OLD BUSINESS o Cracking the Codes Facilitator Training  10 confirmed replies for attendance to the training  Discussion as to how the HRC will support the new facilitators  Meet with Tony at 8:00 am 9/28 to discuss  Tony Goggans is proposing the HRC creates a Dialogue Network to continue the work of Cracking the Codes.  Questions as to the structure of such a proposal  Will speak further with Tony on 9/28  Suggested we add this to the 2020 Work Plan  Jean Runyon will share a sheet on facilitator key points  Christine will look into how to stream Cracking the Codes  Idea was shared that perhaps teachers, etc. could earn CU’s by attending Cracking the Code  Colleen will coordinate food – drinks, snacks, Panaro’s for lunch  Julia will send out the names of those who have confirmed their attendance  At the conclusion of the first session, request that attendees come to the next session with ideas, questions, what they need. HRC will need to define what we can offer o HRC Awards  December 3, 2019 4:00 Reception 4:45 Start City Hall  HRC will invite a keynote speaker – Alma Vigo-Morales  Women’s’ Commission will present their award also. They will contribute to the workforce  Work session for preparation Thursday, October 26 5:30 pm Civic Center 117 N Mason. Enter from the West side. Sean will provide an agenda  Nominations – none as of today HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING: 9/12/19 9/12/2019 – MINUTES Page 3  Award will again be the painting Vic will contact the artist for prices o Youth Member Addition  Decision will need to be made as to whether we add a member or work to change City Code  City Council 9/24 work session will discuss changes to Boards and Commissions o BOARD MEMBER REPORTS o None o OTHER BUSINESS o City Council will conduct a Periodic Review of the HRC this year. Reviews are done every 4 years. A questionnaire looks to see if the HRC is aligned with the City Strategic Plan, the HRC Work Plan, City Code, etc. The City looks for what they can do to support the HRC and what can be enhanced o Intergeneration Conversations. Phil Walker moves that we co-sponsor the activity. Jean Runyon seconds. Vote to approve: 7-0 o Jean Runyon requests that a Principles of Community discussion be added to the October agenda o Jean Runyon also stated that she would like to see the program “The Longest Table” added to the HRC 2020 Work Plan o Cindy Davis – FYI. Issue that occurred at CSU regarding blackface. It was stated by Vic that he believed the CSU administration responded immediately o ADJOURNMENT o Motion to adjourn was made by Vic Smith. Second by Eva Amason. Vote to approve: 7-0.
