CULTURAL RESOURCES BOARD
ANNUAL REPORT - 2017
BACKGROUND
The Cultural Resources Board (CuRB) consists of seven members. Regular meetings
were held on the fourth Thursday of February, March, May, July, August, September,
and October from 12:00 p.m., to 1:30 p.m. The November meeting was cancelled,
and the December meeting was held at an earlier date due to the Holidays. The
Board held three Fort Fund funding sessions on the fourth Wednesday of January,
April, and June.
The Board receives monthly updates from Cultural Services staff and acts in an
advisory capacity to City Council for the Cultural Services Department that includes
the Lincoln Center, the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, the Gardens on Spring
Creek and the Community Creative Center. The Board reviews and advises staff on
the following: The Cultural Services and City Biannual Budgeting for Outcomes
process, Cultural Services facilities improvements, arts and cultural projects and other
issues as they arise. The Board continues to interact with the community to better
understand cultural issues.
Members who served in 2017 were Mr. Steven Sorensen, Mr. Will Flowers, Ms. Tedi
Cox, Mr. Jesse Solomon, Ms. Jane Folsom, Ms. Vicki Fogel Mykles, and Ms. Amy
Cervenan. Mr. Sorensen served as Chairperson. Mr. Flowers served as Vice-
Chairperson.

Staff Liaisons in 2017 were Wendy Williams, Assistant City Manager; Vincent Kitch,
Director of Cultural Services; Cheryl Donaldson, Director of Fort Collins Museum of
Discovery; Jack Rogers, Performing Arts Center Manager; Michelle Provaznik,
Manager of Gardens on Spring Creek; and Megan Kelley, Administrative Clerk II. The
liaison from Visit Fort Collins was Katy Schneider.
YEARLY HIGHLIGHTS - 2017
The Cultural Resources Board’s (CuRB) overarching goal is “To serve as a catalyst in
making Fort Collins a cultural center and destination.” To achieve this goal the
CRB worked in three major areas:
1. Serve as a catalyst for the development of Fort Collins as a cultural center and
destination by working with City Council, staff and cultural groups.
• CuRB members served as liaisons to several groups to gain a broader
understanding of the cultural activities in Fort Collins. The CRB was represented
with the following groups:
- Convention/Visitors Bureau – Katy Schneider
- Art in Public Places – Will Flowers
• CuRB conducted a comprehensive review and update of the Fort Fund program and
created new guideline
• CuRB attended the Super Issue meeting for the Boards and Commissions of the
City of Fort Collins.
• CuRB actively supported and participated in the FoCo Creates Arts and Culture
Master Plan process working with the consultant Louise Stevens of ArtsMarket and
attending community events and activities.
2. Enhance regional awareness of Fort Collins’ arts and cultural events and
activities.
• CuRB continued to support the Visit Fort Collin’s on-line events calendar and
continued to required Fort Fund grantees to list their events on the calendar. The
website calendar is located at www.visitftcollins.com/events .
• CuRB encouraged Fort Fund applicants to broaden their promotional reach,
specifically by adding questions to the application process that inquire about
marketing plans.
• CuRB members served as liaisons to events funded by Fort Fund, attending
approximately 44 different cultural events in the community, lending support and
assuring that the Fort Fund monies were being well spent.
3. Leverage available resources to the Board in forwarding the overarching goal.
• The Board administered three funding sessions for Fort Fund and recommended
grants for distribution as follows:
January 2017 Session $59,850 to 16 applicants Tier 2
April 2017 Session $212,350 to 20 applicants, Tier 1
$84,000 to 5 applicants, Tier 3
June 2017 Session $49,600 to 16 applicants, Tier 2
Total $436,190 to 45 different organizations (listed below)
• Fort Fund grants provided support to more than one hundred community cultural and
recreational events in 2017.
• The Board recommended six Tier 3: Cultural Innovation grants. These grants went
to the Downtown Business Association: First Night Fort Collins; Fort Collins Museum
of Art: Salvador Dali & Pablo Picasso: Selected Drawings from the Collection of Dr.
Wayne Yakes; International Keyboard Odyssiad Festival, U.S.A.: International
Keyboard Odyssiad & Festival; Opera Fort Collins, Inc.: Season 38 Festival; and
Poudre River Public Library District: Fort Collins Book Festival: Writing and Riffs.
• The Board continued to work cooperatively with Visit Fort Collins in making
recommendations for Fort Fund dollars that encourage tourism.
4. Provide networking opportunities for the exchange of ideas and resources.
• The Board continued to distribute information about learning and granting
opportunities to past grantees and the cultural community.
• The CuRB continued to serve as liaisons to appropriate groups in meeting the
CuRB’s overarching goal.
• CuRB board members attended events funded with Fort Fund grants.
• CuRB supported community events, focus groups, and interviews as part of the
FoCo Creates Arts and Culture Master Plan process.
