HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016 - Youth Advisory Board - Annual ReportCity of Fort Collins Youth Advisory Board 2016 Annual Report The Youth Advisory Board was created by City Council resolution on April 19, 1994. The purpose of the Youth Advisory Board is to gather information; to communicate with organizations and agencies regarding youth-oriented issues and problems; to document and discuss issues of importance to youth in the Fort Collins community, specifically as they relate to City-operated services; to develop and assist events and activities pertaining to youth involvement; to review and discuss legislation that may affect youth; and to recommend to City Council local legislation and policy actions or changes which would enhance the status of youth in the Fort Collins community. Since October of 2015, the Youth Advisory Board held 8 meetings. Calvin Flammini was elected Board Chair, Betsy Pruznick Vice Chair and Nela Mohan Secretary. In February Calvin Flammini chose to step from the Chair position due to health issues and Betsy took over as Chair, with Nicholas Lin accepting the Vice Chair role. During the year Becki Nord resigned from the board due to scheduling conflicts and Megan Ronquillo was appointed to fulfill this seat. 2015/2016 Youth Advisory Board Accomplishments • Discussed the 2017 – 2018 Budgeting for Outcomes process with Annie Bierbower, Civic Engagement Liaison and participated in prioritizing offers that would be of most importance to the Youth of Fort Collins. • YAB has begun looking at the feasibility of creating a community chalkboard. Boardmember Nicholas Lin presented the idea to Ellen Martin, Visual Arts Administrator; Mike Calhoon, Director of Parks; and Matt Day, Park Planning and Development. After the discussion the board is considering approaching the Downtown Development Association to discuss collaboration. • The City of Fort Collins YAB joined the City of Loveland YAB to create “Pinwheels for Syria,” this project raised $640.00 from the Bezo Family Foundation, whose purpose is to provide resources for continuing education to Syrian youth who have been displaced by civil war. • Nicholas Lin attended the April 19th City Council meeting to accept the “Everyone Matters,” proclamation from Mayor Wade Troxell. • YAB learned about West Nile Virus and the City of Fort Collins program and discussed ways to educate the youth in the community and make behavioral changes. • YAB learned about the City’s Transportation program from staff members. How master plans are created and approved, development and the open streets program.
