HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 02/08/2017City of Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board MINUTES Wednesday, February 8, 2017 11:30 a.m. Fort Collins Senior Center 1200 Raintree Drive Fort Collins, Colorado 80526 Mission: The Senior Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity y to the Fort Collins City Council on programs and policies that help aging citizens live full and interesting lives and continue to contribute, participate, and share in the life of the community. Speakers 60 min 11:45 am Gino Campana • Would you mind giving us your elevator speech on senior affordable housing? • What are the top 5 issues in senior affordable housing? • What is the review and approval process for senior affordable housing? • Could more seniors review affordable housing? • Could we retrofit current housing to better meet our needs? • Have we considered a low income stipend for senior housing? City government should create eco system that gives people what they need. Challenge seniors are having, downsize but nothing to downsize into. City land use codes. Look at targeted square footage. Target size seniors are looking for. Can permitting be changed, plumbing pipe size. Utilities. Biggest challenge right now is water. City has 5 water districts (only own one). Land inventory. Need collaboration regarding raw water. Carol Webb PowerPoint presentation, water, utilities, spreadsheet of water costs and potential increases. Least expensive to build attached dwellings, condos, townhomes. Construction defect law has affected construction. Multiple lawsuits. No companies in Colorado will ensure any condos. Very little incentive to build affordable housing. Bring down rent by increasing supply. First floor of every building built is accessible currently. Asked why don’t build accessible from the start? Reiterated that all first floors are accessible. How do seniors get involved in the “review” process? One page infographic with list of what seniors have identified as needs in housing. Make it available at various City agencies. Shared housing, retro fit housing, any incentives to retro fit and created these shared housing opportunities? Gino – zoning, HOAs, challenging. Price per square foot, cheaper to build big than small. Smaller homes, townhomes more expensive. City looking at fees right now. Board can get involved in fees (utilities, water). Get presentation on construction defect law. Request letter to be sent to City Council regarding various laws. Compact urban development (mixed use, build up) Board suggests that we host Carol’s presentation in April. Sarah wants a speaker specifically on construction defect law. 12:15 pm Emily Gorgol; Volunteers of America Nutrition Program Manager • Operate 6 different services • Meals on wheels, Smiling Spoon (congregate mealsite), grocery shopping program, RSVP, support for Veteran’s families, handyman VII.
