HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017 - Golf Board - Annual ReportGolf Administration 215 North Mason Street 3rdFloor PO Box 580 Fort Collins, CO 80522 970.416.2265 970.221.6586 - fax fcgov.com/golf GOLF BOARD 2017 ANNUAL REPORT The Golf Board advises and makes recommendations to the Director of Community Services and the City Council as to rules, regulations, policies, administrative and budgetary matters pertaining to the operation and maintenance of all City owned golf courses; City Park Nine, Collindale and SouthRidge. The City of Fort Collins Golf Board held 8 Regular Meetings, 3 Course Outings and attended the Boards and Commissions Annual Appreciation Event in 2017. Board Members were Ashley Gruber, Johnny Hodges, Ross Liggett, John Lyttle, Kathy Meyer, James Penland, and Tom Rock. Johnny Hodges’ and James Penland’s terms expired in December. James was reappointed and Johnny was term limited. John Lyttle resigned from the Board due to relocating outside of the Growth Management Area. The Board elected officers were Johnny Hodges, Board Chairperson, along with John Lyttle as Board Vice Chairperson and James Penland as Board Secretary. Bob Overbeck served as City Council Liaison to the Board. Mike Calhoon, Director of Parks along with Steve Lukowski, Manager of Parks, Dawna Gorkowski, Parks Finance Supervisor and Dawn Worth, Golf Administrative Assistant, provided staff support to the Board. Golf Board Structure and Goals • The Board continued to be City Golf Course advocates. 2017 Budget/Fees • The Board was updated monthly on the financial status of the Golf Division. • In January Mike informed the Board that Darin Atteberry, City Manager, authorized staff to get the irrigation design for SouthRidge. • In February, there was an unexpected expenditure for damage to netting at Collindale due to snow. • In October, the Board reviewed the recommended 2018 Golf fees and charges. They voted in support of increasing the annual pass and range fees. Marketing • Staff continued to work with the Recreation Department’s Community Relations and Marketing staff on Golf Marketing efforts. • Presented the 2017 Marketing Plan in February. • Staff continued to utilize Social Media to update golfers. Increased Social Media presence by adding Instagram. • Partnered with PSD to promote 5th grade golf program. The program ran June-August. • Promoted Junior Play Days and Junior 3-hole play at SouthRidge. • Partnered with CSU on a variety of promotional programs at football games. • Continued sponsorship with Dellenbach and First National Bank which covered the costs of the scorecards and Pedersen Toyota for range balls. • Began conversations with Loveland Golf Manager to share information and investigate partnerships or collaborations. • Advertising efforts included NPR, Coloradoan (online, mobile and print), Transfort Busses and Bus Shelters, Social Media (Facebook, Instagram), Moby Arena and the Recreator • Launched summer/fall golf marketing campaign. “You’re a short putt away.” • Completed drone footage of all three courses. • Hired photographer to take photos of courses to update photo archive. • Created “This Holiday season is a gimme.” Premier card campaign. • Worked with Southridge on promoting the Audubon designation. • Promoted Golf, Parks and Recreation at CSU football games. • Continued with our Heat of the Day, Aeration rates, Seasonal Specials and Veteran’s Day Special. Course Improvements City Park Nine • Added a recycled concrete cart path between #5 green and #6 teebox. • Renovation of sand bunkers at practice green. Collindale • Ordered 36 new Yamaha golf carts. • Installation of new tee markers. • Installed a drainage system for the lot east of the Equipment Storage Building. • Cart path installation between #8 and #9. • Water line installation from club house to residence • Prepared for pump replacement SouthRidge • Dredged the lake on #9/trap renovation • Built a new tee on #6 • Installed drainage for leaking of New Mercer ditch. Sustainable Practices City Park Nine • Utilized a product with Tea Tree to address the worm issue. • Worked with GIS to map the course to assist with watering. • Renewed Audubon certification. • Maintain bee hives and a butterfly garden. Collindale • Southeast corner of the property as renovated and converted to tall grass area. SouthRidge • Audubon Sanctuary recertification. • Maintained bee hives on the course. • Implemented wildflower bed behind #17 green. Policies and Procedures • Maintained a calendar for course events and Leagues to better enhance communication. • Updated the Policy and Procedures Manual to review with the Board in January 2018. Staff Updates • The Board met with the Superintendents in January, The Golf Professionals in March and the Food and Beverage Concessionaires in April. • Jim Higgins celebrated 35 years of service and Randy Conard 30 years at City Park Nine and Mike Enright celebrated 25 years at Collindale. • Dale Smigelsky qualifies for the US Senior Open in Salem Country Club and received PGA of America Public Merchandiser of the Year for Public Facilities award. • Collindale received a Caggy award for Staff Pick Best Front Range/Northeast course, Public/Resort. • Randy Bonneville retired in November as the SouthRidge Golf Course Superintendent and Kenneth Smith was appointed as Interim Superintendent.
