HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 07/23/2015COMMISSION ON DISABILITY Fort Collins City Hall 12:15 p.m. Thursday July 23, 2015 Present: Marilee Boylan, Michael Marr, Sherri Reichow, Hettie Hueber, Michael Devereaux, Rose Luna, Michelle Miller Absent: Terry Schlicting, Leslie Efird (with contact) City: Ethan Cozzens, Dawn Nelson Guests: John Morris, Arianna Kilmer and Bill Cobb – Quadshox, David Young - COFC, CPIO Call to Order: 12:22 p.m. 1. Introductions Welcome visitors 2. Approval of June Meeting Minutes (5 min): Marr moved to approve. Miller seconded. 3. Open Discussion General Public (10 min): Nothing at this time. 4. New Business: a. John Morris – QuadshoX John Morris is the founder and CEO of QuadshoX, a company that builds suspension systems for manual chairs. The company motto is “Built for people in chairs by people in chairs”. He is currently attempting to raise capital to increase production and hire more individuals. His aim is also to raise community awareness to widen bike lanes, etc. He wants to give a voice to FDA regulations and bring the way people think about wheelchairs out of the stone age. 5. Old Business (15 min): a. Debrief of City Council meeting regarding accessible bus stops. Design standards have been approved by City Council. Mark Jackson will be taking a lead on the work sessions to improve pedestrian access. b. Transfort Platform and Survey Cozzens will check with the City Attorney’s office to see if the COD should put its name on a list of items that it sees as priority, such as Sunday service. c. Mayor’s Awards subcommittee recap - Dialogue on tasks to be completed. Please continue to distribute nomination cards. The deadline for nominations is 9/18. d. City ADA celebration The COD has made the decision to incorporate the 25th ADA Anniversary celebration into the Mayor’s Awards in October. The Mayor will be making the proclamation to recognize October as Disability Awareness Month on August 17th. Any COD members who can attend, please do. First-Responder Training Boylan reported that they will begin conversations with COFC Police Department as to what resources they need or would like to see, when responding to a call that involves an individual with a disability. She will keep the COD updated on what training they receive. f. Sidewalks and Sunday Bus Service Nothing new to report at this time. 6. Community News and Updates (5 min): a. Cozzens reported that COFC is in the process of hiring an ADA and Building Compliance person. b. Luna reported that the Elderhaus in Greeley is closing due to low numbers. Also, the future of Foothills Gateway is still unsettled due to a more person centered and community based case management approach. Marr moved to adjourn. Luna seconded.
