HomeMy WebLinkAboutYouth Advisory Board - Minutes - 01/07/2015MINUTES REGULAR MEETING WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2015 YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD DATE: Wednesday, January 7, 2015 LOCATION: Northside Aztlan Community Center, 112 East Willow Street, Conference Room TIME: 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Present: Suraj Renganathan, Nela Mohan, Betsy Pruznick,and Mohini Tangri Absent: Thomas Long, Nathan Welch, and Timiry McCassell Staff Present: Marc Rademacher, Staff Liaison and Christine Macrina, Boards and Commissions Coordinator Guests: Valerie Bolger and Karen Hear, Citizens Against Asphalt Toxins (CAAT) 1). Meeting called to order by Marc Rademacher at 6:35pm. 2). Citizen Participation: Valerie Bolger and Karen Hear, Citizens Against Asphalt Toxins (CAAT) Provided information regarding their initiative to place on the ballot that the City be banned from purchasing asphalt from any organization that manufactures their product within 1 mile of a school, day care center, health care provider, or public recreation area. The speakers requested that the Board recommend support for this initiative to City Council. Boardmembers asked clarifying questions regarding the issue and the impact of this initiative. 3). Approval of Minutes: Did not meet quorum in September no minutes to approve. 4). Chairman’s Report: None. 5). Introductions: The Board introduced themselves, as this was the first meeting for newly appointed boardmembers. 6). Board Officer Selection: The Board discussed the need for a Chair and Secretary. Suraj Renganathan offered to serve as Chair. Mohini Tangri offered to serve as Secretary. Suraj Renganathan motioned the board accept the election of himself as Chair and Mohini Tangri as Secretary. The motion was seconded by Betsy Pruznick. The motion passed unanimously. 7). The board discussed the meeting time and location. A decision was made to meet the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m., locations will vary throughout City facilities. Marc Rademacher will arrange locations for the next 4 months, which will be posted to the website and public notice board in City Hall by Christine Macrina. 8). Smoking Ordinance: Marc Rademacher presented general information on the expanded smoking ordinance going before Council. First Reading will be on February 3, 2015, Second Reading scheduled for February 17, 2015. Christine Macrina offered to see if more background would be available to provide to the board for their consideration and if a survey on community preferences was still open. 9). 2015 YAB Work Plan: The board discussed what their top priorities and concerns are. Christine Macrina present the Boards and Commissions Alignment to the Seven Key Outcome Areas and the City Council 6-Month Agenda Planning Calendar to consider in developing the work plan. The board discussed and decided the following would be their focus:  Transportation o Safe transportation to and from school  Bus system (Transfort and school bus systems)  Bike Path Systems  Climate Action Strategic Plan  Smoking Ordinance  Social Sustainability o Affordable Housing o Homelessness There is interest in the West Nile Virus Management Program and Marc Rademacher will arrange for staff to present information to the board. Christine Macrina offered to create a draft of their work plan for further discussion and creating an action plan. 10).Adjournment: Chair Suraj Renganathan motioned to adjourn at 7:43 p.m., Betsy Pruznick seconded the motion. Motion unanimously passed.
