Introduction of new members None Agenda Review: None Citizen Participation: None Chairman’s Report: 1. November 15th, at 5:30 in Whole Foods, Karen Buchanan and Myles Crane want to meet with YAB members to discuss potential collaboration for this year. All YAB members who are available should try to make it. 2. October 29th, Pranaya and Kelsey went to the Boards and Commissions Collaborative Meeting to discuss how YAB can work with other boards in the City. There were several comments other City Council members made: a. The YAB work plan is not comprehensive enough. City Council doesn’t understand it well. b. YAB should remain in contact with other boards and do more for collaboration. YAB members will go and investigate different boards in the city and find the ones most applicable to the group’s activities. c. Minutes are posted much too late. Secretary Siyu will bring a laptop to meetings to fix this problem as to type the minutes during meetings. Other Business: 1. The Boards and Commissions Annual Dinner will be Wednesday, November 14th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center. YAB members should RSVP to Megan Greer. 2. The discussion for an issue to focus on this year continued. a. Different ideas presented at first included: Future Job Fair, Social Media Safety (Cyber-bullying), Make it Stop: Part 2, Politics and Teens, Marijuana Awareness b. YAB members narrowed down to the key issues of Marijuana Use Awareness and Future Job Fair. c. As for the Marijuana topic, YAB members agreed to look more into the background information. Megan will invite a police officer in to discuss more about marijuana for the next meeting. d. The Future Jobs Fair is the planned big event for spring 2013. YAB members should communicate through email before the next meeting to discuss potential contacts who could participate and share the jobs available in their sectors. Ideas include HP, Intel, CSU Economics, Lawyers, Senators, etc. 3. The Budget Adoption 2nd reading will be November 20th. YAB will look through the budget and see if there are any other issues they would like to bring up to the City Council. 4. The Tobacco Coalition of Larimer Country is starting a program discussing the tobacco-use in Youth prevention. As the program is developed further, YAB will participate and help with the program. 5. CYAC update: a. Many CYAC members are reaching the end of their terms. New applicants are needed, specifically from the Freshmen and perhaps Sophomore classes. b. CYAC will focus on tobacco use in the youth population as a topic. There is a plan to implement a program for students going through any issues. 6. Recreation Update: a. There is a new Recreator out for the Winter season. b. Fort Collins facilities are employing a membership option as a substitution for the punch card. It is $20 a month for Youth and $30 a month for adults. The idea to also add a more expensive membership that is usable in all city facilities was presented. YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES Regular meeting – November 7th, 2012 6:30 p.m. Council Liaison: Aislinn Kottwitz Staff Liaison: Steve Budner, Recreation, 221-6861 Megan Greer, Recreation, 224-6032 Board Chairperson: Pranaya Sathe Board Members Present: Siyu Wu, Pranaya Sathe, Nathan Welch, Sarah Pruznick, Natalie Pederson, Patrice Quadrel, Langston Stuckey Board Member Absent: Kelsey Hennig, Staff Members Present: Megan Greer, Administrator – Recreation Department Guest(s) Present: None Call meeting to Order: The meeting was called to order by President, Pranaya Sathe, at 6:37 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Minutes approved 5-0, motioned by Patrice, seconded by Nathan. Introduction of new members None Agenda Review: None Citizen Participation: None Chairman’s Report: 1. November 15th, at 5:30 in Whole Foods, Karen Buchanan and Myles Crane want to meet with YAB members to discuss potential collaboration for this year. All YAB members who are available should try to make it. 2. October 29th, Pranaya and Kelsey went to the Boards and Commissions Collaborative Meeting to discuss how YAB can work with other boards in the City. There were several comments other City Council members made: a. The YAB work plan is not comprehensive enough. City Council doesn’t understand it well. b. YAB should remain in contact with other boards and do more for collaboration. YAB members will go and investigate different boards in the city and find the ones most applicable to the group’s activities. c. Minutes are posted much too late. Secretary Siyu will bring a laptop to meetings to fix this problem as to type the minutes during meetings. Other Business: 1. The Boards and Commissions Annual Dinner will be Wednesday, November 14th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center. YAB members should RSVP to Megan Greer. 2. The discussion for an issue to focus on this year continued. a. Different ideas presented at first included: Future Job Fair, Social Media Safety (Cyber-bullying), Make it Stop: Part 2, Politics and Teens, Marijuana Awareness b. YAB members narrowed down to the key issues of Marijuana Use Awareness and Future Job Fair. c. As for the Marijuana topic, YAB members agreed to look more into the background information. Megan will invite a police officer in to discuss more about marijuana for the next meeting. d. The Future Jobs Fair is the planned big event for spring 2013. YAB members should communicate through email before the next meeting to discuss potential contacts who could participate and share the jobs available in their sectors. Ideas include HP, Intel, CSU Economics, Lawyers, Senators, etc. 3. The Budget Adoption 2nd reading will be November 20th. YAB will look through the budget and see if there are any other issues they would like to bring up to the City Council. 4. The Tobacco Coalition of Larimer Country is starting a program discussing the tobacco-use in Youth prevention. As the program is developed further, YAB will participate and help with the program. 5. CYAC update: a. Many CYAC members are reaching the end of their terms. New applicants are needed, specifically from the Freshmen and perhaps Sophomore classes. b. CYAC will focus on tobacco use in the youth population as a topic. There is a plan to implement a program for students going through any issues. 6. Recreation Update: a. There is a new Recreator out for the Winter season. b. Fort Collins facilities are employing a membership option as a substitution for the punch card. It is $20 a month for Youth and $30 a month for adults. The idea to also add a more expensive membership that is usable in all city facilities was presented.
