HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 03/22/2012COMMISSION ON DISABILITY Fort Collins City Hall: Council Information Center 12:15 p.m. March 22, 2012 PRESENT: Michael Devereaux, Jennifer Arndt, Terry Schlichting, Wendie Robinson, Hettie Hueber, Jeffrey Coon ABSENT: Gwendolyn Dillman (Contact), Michelle Miller (Contact), Jim Dunlap (Without Contact) CITY: Ethan Cozzens, Rosanne McDonnell GUESTS: George Knight, Myles Crane, Jennifer Palacios Call to Order: 12:15 p.m. 1. Introductions In addition to the COD members present, three guests were present. Myles Crane from the City of Fort Collins Human Relations Commission; George Knight from Elderhaus; and Jennifer Palacios, a Physical Therapist Assistant student from Morgan Community College who was a guest of Jeffrey Coon. 2. Approval of February Meeting Minutes As the COD secretary, Michelle Miller, was absent, the February minutes were unavailable and will be reviewed at the April COD meeting. 3. Open Discussion General Public George Knight from Elderhaus reported that the crosswalk previously discussed remains unchanged and unsafe. Ethan Cozzens responded that the City is in the process of looking at this situation. Mr. Knight did point out that neighbors of the Elderhaus have trimmed their hedges that were partially blocking the sidewalk and this has improved the safety of their residents. 4. New Business a. Elder Abuse Forum Myles Crane, representing the Senior Advisory Committee of the Human Relations Commission, requested COD participation in the Elder Abuse Forum being held on October 22, 1012. He specifically asked if the COD would recommend a panelist for this event, especially as it may related to the disabled elderly. Hueber made a motion for the COD to participate, Arndt seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Mr. Crane also requested a call for nominees for the HRC Women’s Committee awards being held on May 1, 2012. b. Bicycle Coordinator Update Coon updated the COD that Molly North has been named Interim Bicycle Coordinator for the City of Fort Collins. After a short discussion, Cozzens offered to Contact Ms. North to request that wheelchair users be included in the “Bike to Work Day.” c. Mason Corridor MAX BRT Station Naming Coon notified the COD that he, Devereaux and Arndt are planning on attending a workshop on March 29, 2012 in order to assist in naming the MAX BRT station near NRCC/Whole Foods. d. COD Soapbox (WC/Bike Lane Usage) Devereaux presented for approval the proposed Soapbox article regarding the use of wheelchairs in bike lanes. After review, no changes to the text were recommended. Coon made a motion to approve the article for submission to the Coloradoan on behalf of the COD. Hueber seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. e. Boards and Commissions Process Improvement Feedback Meeting Coon and Devereaux notified the COD that they had been invited to participate in this meeting on April 2 nd or April 4 th to provide feedback from our commission regarding process improvements for boards and commissions. 5. Old Business a. Hearing Loop Update Cozzens reported that the priority list of facilities for the City of Fort Collins to consider installing hearing loops has been submitted for funding. This list was developed the feedback from the COD and includes 14 facilities within the city. 6. Community News And Updates Robinson announced that two events related to the ARC of Larimer County are upcoming. These are the “Art for ARC” and the “Changes in Attitudes” talent show. Information on these events will be emailed to COD members. 7. Adjourn Hueber made a motion to adjourn, Arndt seconded and motion passed unanimously.
