HomeMy WebLinkAboutYouth Advisory Board - Minutes - 01/16/2013YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES Regular meeting – January 16th, 2013 6:30 p.m. Council Liaison: Aislinn Kottwitz Staff Liaison: Steve Budner, Recreation, 221-6861 Megan Greer, Recreation, 224-6032 Board Chairperson: Pranaya Sathe Board Members Present: Siyu Wu, Pranaya Sathe, Nathan Welch, Sarah Pruznick, Natalie Pederson, Patrice Quadrel, Kelsey Hennig, Langston Stuckey, Thomas Long Board Member Absent: None Staff Members Present: Megan Greer, Administrator – Recreation Department Guest(s) Present: Melanie Homec and Kori Wilford from Tobacco Coalition of Larimer Country Call meeting to Order: The meeting was called to order by President, Pranaya Sathe, at 6:37 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Minutes approved 9-0, motioned by Kelsey, seconded by Langston. Introduction of new members Thomas Long is a freshman from Liberty Common High School. Agenda Review: None Citizen Participation: Melanie Homec and Kori Wilford from the Tobacco Coalition of Larimer County to introduce a new program. Chairman’s Report: 1. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be in Denver on May 2, 2013. She is hosting an event for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders to hear her speak and ask her questions. YAB members are asked to pass out the flyers and information for the event to middle schoolers. 2. The Larimer Country Youth Advisory Board is hosting a “Young Entrepreneur Tournament” in April geared towards 13-18 year olds. Those interested can participate and YAB members should spread the information to others. Other Business: 1. Melanie Home and Kori Wilford from the Tobacco Coalition of Larimer Country are starting a program discussing the tobacco-use in Youth prevention. a. They explained the planned youth coalition to the YAB members and provided applications. Megan is requesting that all YAB members either recruit friends to sign up for the coalition or for the members themselves to apply. b. They asked YAB members for their point of view on when meetings should be (YAB members suggested Tuesday and Thursday nights), potential points of focus, and other suggestions for the new group. c. The first meeting will be in January, Melanie and Kori will be sending more information to the YAB members as it becomes more developed. d. YAB members presented discussed potential tobacco-related issues including: “smoke-free” high-school campus, stricter regulations on where smoking is allowed, raising awareness of the statistics surrounding tobacco-use 2. The Annual Report is due on January 31st, and YAB members agreed to meet Thursday January 24th at 6:30 p.m. at the Aztlan Center to meet and write the report. 3. The biggest event YAB is planning is the “Future Jobs Fair.” a. It will be on April 17th, 2013 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Northside Aztlan Center. b. Each YAB member is responsible for contacting some professionals to come present at the event. Nathan: CSU, Otterbox; Langston: Front Range Community College; Pranaya: Larimer County Workforce Center; Megan: City of Fort Collins; Natalie: Fort Zed; Patrice: Woodward, CSU Admissions, UNC; Tommy: Vestas; Siyu: Poudre School District; Sarah: University of Colorado Health and Poudre Valley Hospitals c. YAB members should be reporting accordingly with the contacts and their responses d. Advertising options were discussed, including: Facebook event, Soapbox in the Coloradoan, the Recreator, Press release, School newspaper and emails, Posters e. Siyu will create a Facebook event and will collaborate with Langston to design a poster. f. YAB members must discuss potential panelist questions. 4. Recreation Update: a. There is a free Crossfit Demo for teens age 12-17 January 17th, 2013 from 4:15 to 5:00 p.m. YAB members were asked to spread the news about the event. b. The annual “Down for Life” hip hop expo will be on February 23rd, 2013 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Each YAB member is responsible for posting at least two posters in their respective high schools and spread the news about the event as much as possible.
