HomeMy WebLinkAboutGolf Board - Minutes - 07/17/2013Golf Board Meeting – July, 17, 2013 Page 1 of 2 Call Meeting to Order: Shane Houska called the meeting to order 7:00 pm. Agenda Review & Items of Note: No changes to the Agenda Citizen Participation: None at this time Approval of Minutes: Don Sinnar made the motion to approve the Golf Board minutes of, June 19, 2013, seconded by Kevin Gallagher. Minutes approved (7:0) Meeting Summary Shane welcomed Tim Martinez to the Golf Board. Tim gave a brief overview of his background and his interest in golf. Renewal of Golf Professional contracts Mike reminded the Board of the renewal process and stated that David McCleave, SouthRidge Golf Course Professional, and Doug Perry, City Park Nine Golf Course Professional, are both up for contract renewal. David stated that he has enjoyed his time at SouthRidge and he would appreciate the Board’s support of his contract renewal. He mentioned that he enjoys the atmosphere and staff at SouthRidge and he would appreciate the opportunity to continue working there as the Golf Course Professional. Doug feels that he has made a lot of progress at the course and would like to continue to improve the golfing experience at City Park Nine. He would also appreciate the Board’s support of his contract renewal as the Golf Professional at City Park Nine. Don thanked both David and Doug for a job well done and he supports the renewal of their contracts. He mentioned that he would like the Golf Professionals to continue their efforts in supporting and increasing junior play at the courses. Doug reminded the Board that we decreased the cost of the junior pass and provided the card holder additional buddy passes to bring their friends. He said the number of Junior Passes have increased this year. Doug stated that he feels it is important to increase junior play, but there is a lot of competition with number of other junior programs available. These kids are keeping so busy that it’s hard to add another activity into their schedule. Doug mentioned that everyone feels it is important to increase junior play; however when they are on the course the average golfer becomes irritated because it takes a certain skill level to be on the course. He said they have implemented junior play days, but there hasn’t been much interest. Jason suggested that the Pros address the importance of junior play in their articles for the Coloradoan. Doug informed the Board that there are certain guidelines and topics that they have to follow for those articles. Don asked about junior tee markers and Doug said they have family tee markers, but it’s hard to get the kids to play from them if their parents aren’t as well or if the parents aren’t encouraging it. Shane asked how the family golf nights are going. Dave said those who participate enjoy it. He feels that we need to work on marketing these events. Johnny also stated that he feels both David and Doug are doing a great job. Kevin thanked them and said he appreciates the work they do. Tim thanked them for their professionalism. Shane stated that he respects the fact that all three Golf Professionals work so well together. On a motion by Shane Houska, seconded by James Snyder the Golf Board made a recommendation to approve the contract renewal for David McCleave as the SouthRidge Golf Professional and Doug Perry as the City Park Nine Golf Professional. Update on course netting Mike informed the Board that the Superintendents have been doing weekly checks of the netting and have made any necessary repairs. He stated that the Golf Division received funds from the Safety Innovation fund to for netting at SouthRidge to help assure the safety of staff. James expressed his concerns that these funds weren’t going towards other projects. Mike explained that these funds are only allowed for specific safety projects and that we are very thankful to have received them. Don mentioned that J.R. had stated that he would set up a meeting with the City Attorney to discuss the Golf Professionals being held accountable for errant golf balls. Mike stated that he would mention to J.R. that you would like an update. Don suggested that the courses us limited flight balls. Dale stated that sales would decrease. Don mentioned that there is a bridge that needs to be repaired at SouthRidge and asked if we could include this in our BOB offer. Mike reminded the Board of the BOB process and said that we feel the irrigation system is our highest priority projects at this time and essentially we are competing for funds so we don’t want to appear too greedy when putting together our offer. Tim asked if we could have a sponsor for the instillation of the bridge. Mike said that the city has specific guidelines and codes that we need to follow. Other Business Mike reminded the Board that we submitted a survey last season. We have taken a look at our results and are beginning to work on the bunkers at SouthRidge. We are hoping to have them refurbished by August. Financials Mike stated that our revenues are currently up, but the rounds are down some. He said like always, we just continue to hope for good weather. On a motion by Tim, seconded by Shane the Board adjourned at 8:15 pm.
