HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuman Relations Commission - Minutes - 12/13/2012FORT COLLINS HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION Regular Meeting – December 13, 2012 5:30 p.m. Council Liaison: Mayor Karen Weitkunat Staff Liaison: Rebecca O’Donnell Chairperson: Karen Buchanan A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on Thursday, December 13, 2012, CIC Room, 300 Laporte Avenue, Fort Collins, Colorado. BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Elaine Boni Karen Buchanan Colleen Conway Myles Crane Christine Hays James Lesco James Owiny EXCUSED ABSENCE: Kent Bryans Preety Sathe STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT: Rebecca O’Donnell, Staff Liaison CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair Karen Buchanan at 5:30 p.m. PUBLIC INPUT Fort Collins resident Angelo Smaldoni attended, stating he moved to Fort Collins a month prior and is interested in diversity and wanted to find out more about the Human Relations Commission. Police Captain Jerry Schiager attended to train HRC Members on the Citizen Liaison Program. Citizen Review Board member Judy Rodriguez also attended as a guest. AGENDA REVIEW At the request of staff liaison Rebecca O’Donnell, HRC business was moved to the start of the agenda with the Citizen Liaison program training to follow. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Karen Buchanan called for a motion to approve the November 8 regular meeting minutes and the November 13 special meeting minutes. Myles Crane moved to accept the motion. Christine Hays seconded the motion. The motion was approved 7:0. HRC December 13, 2012 – Page 2 BUDGET REPORT Myles Crane requested the HRC approve payment of $55.75 to Front Range Rental for table linens used at the Elder Abuse Forum the previous month. Karen Buchanan called for a motion to approve payment. Elaine Boni moved to accept the motion. James Lesco seconded the motion. The motion was approved 7:0. Rebecca O’Donnell reported that there is an HRC available balance of $335.34 that included Front Range Rental charges of $55.75. Rebecca O’Donnell asked if the HRC wished to allocate the remainder of their 2012 budget. James Owiny stated he had not received invoices from the Senior Center facility or Tastebuds Catering but was expecting them within the next few days. He stated the Senior Center does not require a deposit. James Lesco stated his research estimated the cost of an HRC table top banner to be approximately $180.00 but preferred the remaining funds be spent on the HRAward breakfast first. HRC members agreed that Rebecca O’Donnell will allocate the remaining HRC 2012 budget to Tastebuds Catering once the invoice is received. Karen Buchanan called for a motion to allocate the remaining HRC 2012 budget to Tastebuds Catering. Elaine Boni moved to accept the motion. Christine Hayes seconded the motion. The motion was approved 7:0. COMMITTEE REPORTS Executive Committee Karen Buchanan stated that she and vice chair Elaine Boni were attending their last meeting and asked for volunteers to act as interim chairs for the January and February HRC meeting. James Lesco and Myles Crane agreed to step in to the interim roles of Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively for January. They agreed to switch roles for the February meeting. Christine Hays stated that HRC new members include Preety Sathe’s reappointment and new members Mary Lipscomb Lyons and Faith Sternlieb. Rebecca O’Donnell will forward contact information to HRC members once appointments are confirmed after December 18, 2012. HRC members will meet and mentor new members before the January 10, 2013 HRC meeting. Government Relations Committee James Lesco stated he will attend the City Council meeting on December 18. Greg Tempel, Senior Assistant City Attorney will attend the January 10, 2013 HRC meeting HRC December 13, 2012 – Page 3 Educational Outreach Committee Myles Crane reported that Joe Frank will attend the February HRC meeting to discuss the City’s Social Sustainability Department and how they work with HUD. Myles stated the Youth Advisory Board will host a “Jobs of the Future” educational program on April 17, 2013 and is asking for HRC support. There will be a moderated panel discussion on jobs of the future and how to get hired. Myles reported he attended the Office on Aging meeting and watched an interesting video on the “Future of Aging, Triumph or Tragedy” and would like to bring the short video to a future HRC meeting for viewing. Karen Buchanan asked if HRC members received the email from Bob Overbeck with a link to the YouTube video of the Elder Abuse Forum. Members responded that they did get the YouTube link. Karen also stated that Elder Abuse forum feedback, particularly the panel “Q & A”, is to be part of the CSU report. Myles Crane stated he would follow up. Media & Community Recognition Committee James Owiny updates were part of the budget discussion. NEW BUSINESS Reminder the 2012 HRC Annual Report is due January 31, 2013. OLD BUSINESS OTHER Due to the condensed HRC meeting, no bullet points will be sent out for December 2012. HRC members thanked Karen Buchanan, Elaine Boni and Rebecca O’Donnell for their service to the HRC. ADJOURNMENT Karen Buchanan called for a motion to adjourn. James Lesco moved to accept the motion. James Owiny seconded the motion. The motion was approved 7:0. The regular meeting was adjourned at 6:00 p.m. with Citizen Liaison Program training to follow with Captain Jerry Schiager. HRC December 13, 2012 – Page 4 The next meeting of the HRC will be held on January 10, 2013 at 5:30 pm, 300 LaPorte Avenue. Location of the January meeting has been changed to the Council Conference Room, which is just north of the Council Chambers off of the main lobby. Minutes approved by majority vote of the Commission on January 10, 2013.
