Board Members were Bob Gerard, Johnny Hodges, Shane Houska, Michele Marquitz, Jason Patello, Steve Simonson, Don Sinnar, James Snyder and Bob Visocky. Kevin Gallagher was elected to the Board in July upon Steve Simonson’s resignation. The Board elected officers were Shane Houska, Board Chairperson, along with Johnny Hodges as Board Vice Chairperson and Don Sinnar as Board Secretary. Aislinn Kottwitz served as City Council Liaison to the Board. J.R. Schnelzer, Director of Parks along with Bill Whirty, Manager of Parks, Dawna Gorkowski, Parks Finance Supervisor and Dawn Worth, Golf Administrative Assistant, provided staff support to the Board. Bob Gerard and Michele Marquitz served their last term on the Golf Board. The Golf Board advises and makes recommendations to the Community Services Director and the City Council as to rules, regulations, policies, administrative and budgetary matters pertaining to the operation and maintenance of all City-owned golf courses, City Park Nine, Collindale and SouthRidge. 2012 Budget • Received updates on the Golf Division’s budget throughout 2012. • Participated in the 2013/2014 budget process. • Reviewed and approved the proposed 2013 golf fees and charges.2013 Increases will be on cart rentals, one dollar for 9 holes and two dollars for 18 holes. Marketing • Continued to work with Golf and Recreation staff regarding marketing strategies. • Supported the partnership between the Golf Division and Recreation on youth golf programs. The Fort Collins Fore Kids event was replaced with the SNAG (starting new at golf) and Beginning Golf Program. • Discussed and approved a Veteran’s discount for the week of Veteran’s Day. • Staff implemented an on-line survey to help determine playability at the three courses. Data is being utilized to determine what the Division is doing right and what improvements are needed is being reviewed. The Board provided input and was updated throughout this process. • Participated in the Denver Golf Expo. We partnered with Armstrong Hotel with a stay- and-play package as well as the DBA for prizes. • Supported replacing the punch passes with the Premier Card and implementing a Super Pass for 2013. The Premier Card can be used for full price green and cart fees. The Super Pass will allow the golfer to play any course at any time without per play fees, carts and range are excluded. Sustainable Practices • The courses continued to complete their certifications in different categories to achieve Audubon Sanctuary Certification. Courses continued the use and evaluation of organics products, fertilizers and pesticides. • Improvements to the Collindale cart barn were completed to support 27 new electric carts. These carts replaced the older gas powered carts and reduced the courses carbon footprint. This action directly supports the City’s number one sustainability goal of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. • In 2012 SouthRidge clubhouse was chosen for a City of Fort Collins Innovation fund project that included upgrades to energy efficient lighting inside as well as outside of the building, including the parking lot lights. • SouthRidge replaced the irrigation radio control system to meet federal standards. The FDA took away the wide band frequencies causing an issue nationwide. Other Projects • January and February – The Board was updated on the clean-up process from the 2011 October storm. The Forestry Division spent six weeks on the three courses. • May – The Board discussed and voted on adjusting meeting dates as well as decreasing the number of meetings. The Board selected to meet the first Wednesday in November, cancel the December, January and February meetings and to meet the first Wednesday in March. The April-October meetings will continue to take place on the third Wednesday. • July – Johnny Hodges, Board Vice Chairperson, and Don Sinnar, Board Secretary, represented the Golf Board at the City Council’s Periodic Review of the Board. Major topics of discussion included the antiquated irrigation system and City Park Nine and SouthRidge. Discussion on water conservation and general environmental practices took place. Follow up on funding opportunities will continue into 2013. Johnny and Don represented the Board very well in front of Council. • October – Shane Houska, Board Chairperson, and Johnny Hodges, Board Vice Chairperson, attended a Strategic Planning meeting of the Boards and Commissions. The meeting was aimed at improving the effectiveness of boards and commissions through collaboration, communication and support of the City Council. Shane and Johnny felt they achieved a better understanding of how to communicate with City Council. They felt it might be beneficial to collaborate on projects with the Water Board. Further discussion of this collaboration will take place in 2013. • October and November – The Board discussed decreasing the number of Board Members at their October meeting. In November the Board was updated on the legal process and made a formal recommendation to decrease the number of members from 9 to 7. The recommendation will go to City Council for discussion later in November. Approved by the Golf Board on 11/07/12
