Mason, Room I-B Attendees: Sue Baccari, Marjorie McTaggart, Becky Goldbach, Barbara Goff, Kristine Callahan, Kathleen Sullivan -Bailey Excused: Annette Zacharius, Kristen Sergi Staff Liaison: Suzanne Jarboe -Simpson Guest: Joann Ginal, Human Relations Commission The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by Chair Sue Baccari. The January 21, 2009 minutes were presented for review. One correction was made to the minutes. Wonders of Women presentation was made by Dr Boryshenko, not Dr. Shenko. This change was noted in the minutes. Barb moved that the minutes be accepted as corrected. Becky seconded the motion. The motion passed. Joann Ginal introduced herself as a representative from the City's Human Relations Commission (HRC), and currently serving as the Chair for the Education and Outreach Committee. Joann thanked the Women's Commission for making time on the schedule to meet with her. She expressed her delight in reconnecting with the Women's Commission, as she had served on the Commission more than ten years ago. The HRC is beginning work on a community dialogue around elder abuse, and is beginning this process with a brainstorming session scheduled for May 201h at 6:30pm at the Fort Collins Senior Center. The topic is timely because of recent television stories about high school students abusing residents of care facilities in Minnesota. Joann invited members of the Women's Commission to participate in the brainstorm session, and suggested there may be ways for the HRC and the Women's Commission to work together on this issue, since women comprise the majority of the victims of elder abuse. The HRC will handle the advertising for this brainstorming session. All ages are welcome to participate. The Women's Commission expressed interest in continuing the dialogue with the HRC and invited Joann to come back to the March 2009 meeting. Joann agreed to do so, and also invited members of the Women's Commission to attend an HRC meeting which are held the 2nd Thursday of the month at 5:30pm in the CIC room at 300 LaPorte Avenue, City Hall. Joann distributed nomination forms for the HRC's awards which are presented on May I't at a breakfast. Election of Officers Becky moved that Kristen Sergi be elected secretary of the Women's Commission. Marjorie seconded the motion. The motion passed Marjorie moved that Sue Baccari be elected Chair of the Women's Commission. Kristen C. seconded the motion. The motion passed. Kathleen moved that she, Kathleen, be elected Vice Chair of the Women's Commission. Marjorie seconded the motion. The motion passed. The slate of officers for 2009 are Sue Baccari, Chair; Kathleen Sullivan -Bailey, Vice Chair, Kristen Sergi, Secretary. Updates The Women's Commission has been asked if they'd be interested in providing a brief overview of Women's History Month and women's suffrage at the annual Journey Conference, a conference for young women. The conference is scheduled for March 3. Barb volunteered to check with the League of Women Voters to see if they'd be interested in making the presentation, and/or if they had materials that someone else could present. Barb will also check in with Annette to find out home much time is allocated for this presentation. Barb will email the results of these conversations to the Commission. Essay Contest Update Becky asked that the readers complete their work and get their results to her as soon as possible. She has several very tight deadlines to meet in order to get the results to the PSD contact, and in the packets for the School Board for the March 10 presentation. PSD staff will notify the winners of the essay contest and let them know about the presentation in front of the School Board on March 10, the reception immediately following the School Board presentation, and the presentation in front of City Council on April 21 at 5:30pm. Becky will create the agenda materials and `program' for the PSD School Board. She asked for assistance in gathering donations/prizes for the winners of the essay contest. r Kathleen volunteered to assist with donations for prizes, as well as donations for l� refreshments for the reception. In addition to food items, the reception includes an introduction of the winners of the contest, flowers for their teachers, readings of the winning essays, comments by a guest speaker — this year, Mary Shaw, the 2008 Marcile N. Wood Award winner has agreed to be the guest speaker. The reception will be held in the Commons Room at Poudre High School. The room will be available for set up at 6pm. Becky asked for volunteers to assist with the set up. Marjorie volunteered to create the `thumbs up' for the Coloradoan, once the winners are identified. She also volunteered to see if the Coloradoan would send a reporter to cover the presentation in front of the School Board or in front of City Council. Sue agreed to be the primary speaker in front of the School Board. Sue agreed to create a poster that will be displayed at the receptions. Proclamation for International Women's Day — scheduled for 5:30pm on March 3, 2009 Becky and Kristine C. volunteered to represent the Women's Commission and receive the proclamation from the mayor on Tuesday, March 3. Barb provided a draft which Suzanne will give to the City Clerk's office. .D (� The Commission recommended that in 2010, they provide a proclamation for Women's History Month (March). Marcile N. Wood Award This function needs a `chair'. Kristine C. agreed to chair the Marcile N. Wood award process. Kathleen will help with the advertising of this event, and will contact Annette for the forms from last year. City's Budget Process City Boards and Commissions have been asked to participate in reviewing and providing input on City outcomes for the 2010-11 Budgeting for Outcomes process. There will be three opportunities for input and comment. Comments and input as part of the first opportunity are due to the City's Finance Director by the end of March, 2009. Commission members are asked to review the 2009 Budgeting for Outcomes funding areas and statements, and provide comments at the March meeting. Sue distributed information on the seven funding areas and statements. These are listed at the end of these minutes. Newsletter Articles The goal is still to get articles published on the Women's Commission website. Newsletter topics were tabled until March. i�Parental Involvement for Academic Achievement An update on this legislation was tabled until the March meeting. Appointment of a Youth to a Vacancy on the Women's Commission Kristine C moved that the Commission ask Suzanne to request the City Clerk's Office to actively recruit candidates younger than 21 to apply for appointment to the Women's Commission. Marjorie seconded the motion. The motion passed. It was suggested that the remaining topics from the January '09 meeting agenda be moved to the March meeting agenda. The meeting was adjourned at 8:31pm.
