HomeMy WebLinkAboutYouth Advisory Board - Minutes - 02/04/2009YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES Regular meeting —February 4, 2009 7:00 p.m. Council Liaison: Lisa Poppaw Staff Liaison: Steve Budner, Recreation, 221-6861 Board Chairperson: Kai Stuckey Board Members Present: Vivian Acott, Lisa Parker, Brittany Belmarez, Caroline Wockner and Kai Stuckey Board Member(s) Absent: none Staff Members Present: 'Steve Budner, Administrator — Recreation Department Carol Fahring, Staff Support — Recreation Department Guest(s) Present: none Call meeting to Order: The meeting was called to order by board member Caroline Wockner at 7:10 pm because the Chairperson was late. Election of a Vice -Chairperson: Kai Stuckey went from Vice -Chairperson to Chairperson with the resignation of Josh Disney. Therefore it was necessary to elect a new Vice -Chairperson. Lisa Parker and Caroline Wockner both ran for the office, and in a close vote, Lisa was elected. Approval of Minutes: The minutes from January 7 were approved after a motion by Caroline which was seconded by Vivian (4-0). Agenda Review: There was no agenda review. Citizen Participation: There was no citizen participation. Chairman's report: Since Kai was late to the meeting, Lisa gave the chairperson's report. She was pleased with the article in the Coloradoan about traffic at the intersection of Lady Moon and Kechter. Joe Olson, city engineer,. suggested staggering start times at the schools involved. However the Kinard principal told Lisa that this was impossible because of bus schedules. Steve suggested that she call the HOA's in the area and speak to their boards about the problem. He also suggested that Mr. Olson attend the board meetings. Other business: - The year end report was approved, and Carol was to submit it to Karla Smith at the City Clerk's office. - Steve gave Kai a copy of the Boards and Commissions manual. The address to view it online is www.fcjZov.com/boards. - City Council is on a 2-year budget cycle. Currently they are working on 2010 and 2011. However they approve only 1 year at a time. City Council elections are in April. Between now and mid- Youth Advisory Board Minutes February 4, 2009 Page 2 March they will be looking at the 7 results areas and deciding if any need to becombined or changed. The areas are economic health, environmental health, neighborhood livability, safer community, cultural, recreational and educational opportunities, transportation and high performing government. Steve distributed a hand-out about the results areas and directed the board members to study it so that we can provide feedback about them to the council. Do the 7 results areas still make sense as priority areas through which to organize the BFO process or do they need to be modified? Do the existing results areas adequately reflect the community's needs? - Members had been assigned the task of bringing 2 ideas each to the February meeting for the work plan for 2009. Vivian Acott• Develop a brochure to recruit youth to the board. Have at least 1 member from each school. Have special events. Do an environmental series. Lisa Parker: Work on traffic problems which affect youth and work with the City on solutions. Create a stronger board that can communicate with the city and the school district. Create a plan to get members from all of the city's high schools. Brittany Belmarez: Go to schools and ask youth what they feel and care about and what events they want. Organize an event to promote YAB. Also have council members and police officers there. Have colleges talk about financial aid. Caroline Wockner: Need closer communication with council. Clean river Kai Stuckey' Need more events like a Battle of the Bands. Continue speaker series. Do press releases and put YAB agendas and minutes in the paper. Lisa organized these ideas and e-mailed them to the board members. At the March meeting we will decide which ideas to work on for the rest of 2009. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm with a motion from Vivian which was seconded by Brittany.(5-0).
