HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008 - Human Relations Commission - Annual ReportCity of F6rt CollinsHuman Relations Commission 2008 HRC Annual Report As Community leaders and advisors to City Council, we research, deliberate and take proactive and responsive measures to promote the dignity of individuals and groups in Fort Collins. HRC Mission Statement Educational Outreach Comm HRC pamphlets were updated, printed and distributed at various functions. A power point presentation on the Human Relations Commission was developed and is available for group presentations. The HRC sponsored a table and distributed brochures at the 5th annual "Pride in the Park" on June 7. 2008. A member offered a Coffee Talk on: Guru: Fact vs. Fiction after a lecture at the Library on July 13, 2008. HRC continues to support the Eracism Film Series and sponsored an HRC Coffee Talk after the session on Japanese Internment Camp Survivors. Dr. Douglas Ishii spoke to over fifty people at the Harmony Library on October 13, 2008. Members attended Pathways Past Poverty meetings sponsored by Fort Collins United Way. Members attended, spoke at and distributed brochures at forums sponsored by N.I.O.T.A. (Not In Our Town Alliance). Members attended and received training in Deliberative Dialogue through CSU's Center for Public Deliberation. Members attended NIOTA's Hate Crimes, Cults and Gangs Conference on April 12, 2008. Page 1/2 January 8, 2009 Government Relations Committee City Council, Citizen Review Board, Senior Advisory Board, Larimer County Office on Aging Advisory Board, Commission on Disabilities meetings were attended and /or monitored. The HRC maintains and updates a list of translators available to citizens who may need this service. The committee continued to monitor legislation and make recommendations to City Council. On Oct. 9, 2008, the HRC passed a motion taking a stand against Amendment 46 to the Colorado State Constitution. This amendment was on the November ballot. The committee has contacted the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and is working to arrange a joint meeting in 2009. The committee submitted a Human Rights Day Proclamation which was presented by Mayor Hutchinson at the City Council meeting on December 2, 2008. Media /Community Recognition Committee Once again the HRC conducted a search for individuals, groups, companies or organizations which inspire contributions and leadership on behalf of minority or disadvantaged citizens to the betterment of the community. A Breakfast was held at the Lincoln Center on May 1, 2008 and awards were presented to the winners. Guest Speaker was Susan Kirkpatrick, former mayor of Fort Collins. The committee working on that event helped to create on-line nomination forms which facilitated the process. An article and a letter by HRC members about the disgrace of the existence of Japanese Internment camps were published in the Coloradoani in October, 2008. A soapbox article on the Human Relations Commission's effort to join with other groups to end discrimination was published by the Coloradoan on Dec. 4, 2008. Page 2/2 January 8, 2009
