Laporte Avenue, Fort Collins, Colorado. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m. PUBLIC INPUT. None. 2. GUEST SPEAKER. None. 3. AGENDA REVIEW No changes. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Cristina Matsushima a motion to approve the November 14th HRC minutes as corrected. James Ross seconded the motion. The minutes were approved 6:0. BUDGET REPORT/APPROVED EXPENDITURES Becky reported all prepaid expenses were processed by December 31' successfully using remaining 2007 funds. 4. COMMITTEE REPORTS Executive/Maryanne. No meeting in December. Maryanne reported the selection of Chair, Vice -chair, and Committee Chairs would take place at the February 13'" meeting. Nominations would be taken from the floor. She asked HRC January 9, 2008 — Page 2 that members consider where they'd like to see changes and come prepared to nominate and vote. • Government Relations/Elaine. No report. • Education/Community Outreach/Maya & Karen. (Meets 151 Sundays, 5 p.m., Mugs Coffee Shop, 261 S. College) Karen reported that Maya has stepped down as co-chair of the Committee. The Committee work plan includes quarterly roundtables on topics of interest to the community with Joann Ginal's help and timely exchange of information with the CSU Advocacy Office. Karen's formulating a diversity educational program for school aged children. She reported that the Eracism Film Series' name has been changed to Eracism & Human Rights Film Series and that she had made contact with Caroline Tu Farley of NIOTA. Maryanne asked for what information had been forthcoming with her exchange with Caroline. What is the topic under consideration for the April panel discussion? What is the expectation of the HRC representative —what type of expertise and preparation is required for the presentation? Maryanne suggests once all that is known the Commission would select the HRC member with the best expertise on the topic. Karen to contact Caroline and will share that information with the Commission. Maryanne ask the Education/Community Outreach Committee to take lead with James Ross and Center for Public Deliberation Martin Carcasson on how the HRC can work in conjunction with the Center on community programs. • Public Relations & Community Recognition/Cristina. (Meets Td Thursdays, 5:30 p.m. Mugs Coffee Shop, 261 S. College) James reported that he's been working with Stephanie Morton of MOCA and her program with school aged students to create centerpieces for the Human Relations Award Breakfast. Stephanie is asking for information on the theme for the event and what size would be appropriate. Also, it's the Committee's intent to honor the efforts of the students at the event. Becky reported she was advised from City staff that they did not have room in the January City News insert for another HR Award article, and she has not heard back from them about running an article in the February City News utility billing insert. She would advise Cristina when she has an update. Maryanne suggested they look at the website (www.fcgov.com/hra) and update it as much as possible with 2007 award winner information. In the long run, she thinks it'd be a great place for HRC efforts and links to other community agencies/programs with like missions. Becky reported no nominations have been made electronically. Joann suggested the Committee contact the Coloradoan about the Commission stuffing newspapers with information on the awards/nomination forms. Cristina will be scheduling a PR/CR Committee meeting with Becky to coordinate tasks in the last phase of planning, including updating the nominations mailing list. HRC January 9, 2008 — Page 3 5. OLD BUSINESS • Tao Line Translation James Ross reported the tag line (Promoting inclusion through dialogue and action) lends itself well to Spanish. Either word (premiendo or foment) is progressive and proactive for use on Commission materials. • Name taps Kelly Evans distributed the new name tags. • HRC 2007 Annual Report The Board reviewed a draft of the 2007 Annual Report Maryanne distributed via email prior to the meeting. James Ross moved to approve the HRC 2007 Annual Report as submitted. Karen Wong -Brown seconded the motion. The motion was approved 6:0. • Recruiting New Member Maryanne asked members to consider community members who might be interested in serving on the HRC and encourage them to make application for the current vacancy. 6. NEW BUSINESS MLK (1/21/08) Participation. Maryanne asked how the Commission wanted to participate with the community for the Martin Luther King holiday events. In the past members would walk from the CSU Oval to Old Town Square and attend the activities planned there. Because no one was sure what was planned for the 2008 event and because it was coming up pretty quickly, Maryanne suggested the Commission pass on participating this year. Members agreed. • State of the City (1/29/08) Maryanne plans to attend. • Freedom to Marry Day (2/23/08) and Life on a Shoestring Series. Maryanne had been approached by Cheryl Distaso relative to support of the Freedom to Marry Day. Activities will take place at Avogadro's Number on February 23. Cheryl asked if the Commission would take an active role in supporting the event —such as a resolution to City Council or sponsoring a table at the event. A couple of members voiced some concern about aligning themselves too closely with one group or another. Rather, as agreed, they'd like to selectively support the efforts of both side of any community question —promoting inclusion through dialogue and action. Maryanne said she'd speak further with Cheryl, returning with information at the February meeting. The Commission could decide then how they'd like to move forward on this particular request. Mims Harris, formerly chair of the Fort Collins Multicultural Commission shared information with Maryanne on Life on a Shoestring Series —Perspectives on Stepping Out of Poverty. The series is a month -long series starting February 19`h of presentations, community discussions, and perspectives to help advance a community dialog on the issue of poverty in Fort Collins/Northern Colorado and the role each of us plays in guiding our community to a path of renewed economic HRC January 9, 2008 — Page 4 self-sufficiency. CURRENT EVENTS. The Commission spent some time discussing differences between local and national candidates, upcoming local and state caucuses, and the fact that the Democratic National Convention would be taking place in Denver August 25, 26 and 27. 8.
