HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 09/13/2007COMMISSION ON DISABILITY MINUTES Thursday, September 13, 2007 Fort Collins City Hall Council Information Center: 12:15 p.m. Present: Beverly Hageseth, Susan Williams, Steve Rierson, Janie Bondhus Black, Mary Elizabeth Lenahan, Bruce Byrne (City Liaison), Vivian Armendariz, Terry Schlichting, Kimberlee Imig, new commissioners Lydia Wiatrowski and Laura Burnett. Guests: Nancy Dupree Landsberger, nursing student Minutes from March, April, May, and June were reviewed and editorial comments made. Mary Elizabeth moved and Susan seconded approval of March minutes with correction of Nancy Jackson's affiliatons. Bev moved and Susan seconded approval of the May minutes compiled by Susan. Mary Elizabeth moved and Susan seconded approval of the June minutes with edits. Susan moved and Laura seconded approval of the April minutes with edits. Mary Elizabeth will make all corrections and submit to Karla for updating on the Commission website. GUEST Susan Dupree Landsberger introduced herself and was attending the commission meeting for a college course to familiarize herself with our work. OLD BUSINESS: NOMINATIONS: Elections will be held in October with offices being taken in January. Steve nominated Terry as chair, Susan seconded. Susan nominated Laura as Vice Chair and Bev seconded. Laura nominated Lydia as Secretary and Susan seconded. Susan nominated Vivian as Historian and Steve seconded. Steve and Susan exit in December 2007. Bev will be able to assist with transportation, etc. for Terry. COMMUNITY ACCESS POWER POINT: Vivian presented the Power Point begun by the sub- committee in January and previewed in April. The final version will include the following changes: delete the 8 lbs. resistance for heavy doors, since the regulation is 5 lbs. and include the ramping regulation of 1" of rise for each linear foot. Vivian reports that the brochure is not done yet. Susan noted that railroad tracks could be the responsibility of multiple entities and therefore, it may be difficult to get a consensus for changes. In regards to curb cuts, it was noted that a curb cut is needed on City Park Avenue between Mulberry and West Elizabeth. (Streets Department phone is 221-6615). Power Point was approved with changes as needed and ready to submit to the Mayor for his comments. Vivian wants to meet about the brochure before submitting to the Mayor. She, Susan, Bev, and Terry will meet for final edits at Joes's, Tuesday, September 18th at 12:00. Vivian will e-mail. Vivian and Susan will meet with the Mayor on Tuesday, September 18th to share the Community Access Power Point and Brochure. COMMISSION ON DISABILITY LETTERS DIAL -A-RIDE: Letter as written was not approved. Members of the commission were asked to review the letter and make comments by September 28th. Susan will revise and finalize and send to Bruce to distribute to City Council. Terry noted that a CSU user of Dial -a -Ride is still denied use unless there is a 30o chance of rain. Bev recommended that the Commis,Sion include an attorney. BUILDINGCODE: letter to Mike Gebo supporting the changes to the building code was approved. Susan moved and Mary Elizabeth seconded. MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY: one comment that information should be provided "in advance" for chemical spraying was the only edit. Susan moved and Vivian seconded and the letter was approved. SPECIAL NEEDS EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Susan anticipates the form and process will be up and running in November, 2007. Vivian will do data entry at home, possibly with pay and within certain times. Questionnaire has been finalized from the Douglas County form and is down to two pages. The process for deciding who gets CD's with information and who needs services is ongoing. Pets are still a question. Susan will bring the form to the next Commission meeting. NEW BUSINESS: To familiarize ourselves with what materials are stored at Operation Services, Vivian and Steve will meet at 117 North Mason to go through boxes on Thursday, September 20th at 12:00. SUB-COb24ITTEE REPORTS: MAYOR'S AWARDS 2007: Mary Elizabeth noted that the sub -committee meets September 27th 12:15 to determine the winners and to discuss food for the Award ceremony. Susan suggested buffet -style food rather than sandwiches. Mayor's Award press release has been sent out. Nominations forms will be mailed and information is on the web -site. The Mayor's proclamation about Disability Awareness and Disability Employment Month is scheduled for the Council meeting on October 2Id. Awards will be determined on September 27th, RSVP's back by October 5th, and the Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday October 16th 11:30 to 1:00 in the Council Meeting Room. Mayor Hutchinson will present awards at the luncheon and announce the winners at the open of the Council meeting that evening. OTHER OLD BUSINESS from August: THANK YOU TO GLADYS RUSSELL OF HEAR-N-COLORADO who attended the August 9th Commission on Disability meeting with her guest, Barbara Fuller. Although we did not have a quorum at that meeting, Gladys shared valuable information about issues facing persons with hearing loss, a virtually invisible disability. As a part of Disabled Resource Services, Hear-N-Colorado offers education, advocacy, support, and socialization for people with a hearing loss and their families. For more information, contact Gladys at 568-7610 or barracuda@frii.com The commissioners present at the August meeting requested that Gladys continue to inform us about their process with Larimer County for accommodations at public meetings, particularly the purchase of a Harris communication block with sending unit for persons with hearing aids. Susan motioned for the September 13th meeting to adjourn and Steve seconded. Meeting adjourned at 2:00.
