Laporte Avenue, Fort Collins, Colorado. BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Cristina Matsushima Elaine Boni Joann Ginal Kent Bryans Kelly Evans Maya Jairam EXCUSED ABSENCE: Karen Wong -Brown UNEXCUSED ABSENCE: James Ross STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT: Rebecca O'Donnell, Staff Liaison 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by interim Chair Elaine Boni. PUBLIC INPUT. None 2. GUEST SPEAKER. None. 3. AGENDA REVIEW. Kelly Evans made a motion to approve the updated July 10 HRC agenda. Joann Ginal second the motion. The agenda was approved 6:0. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Kent Bryans made a motion to approve the June 12 HRC minutes. Joann Ginal seconded the motion. The minutes were approved 6:0. BUDGET REPORT/APPROVED EXPENDITURES Becky reported HRC has spent $1,061.75 YTD for 2008. Also, $50.00 from last year's DBA bucks to Stephanie Morton with MOCA for the FIR Awards program. COMMITTEE REPORTS • Executive/Elaine. Elaine stated that her term expires December 31, 2008. Elaine stated she will be renewing her HRC membership and will do so by July 18, 2008, however, HRC July 10, 2008 — Page 2 she does not want to be elected as chair. She is willing to serve as interim until year end elections. She encouraged current HRC members to volunteer for serving as chair. Becky O'Donnell stated that the Clerk's Office advertised several times for current board vacancies. No new applications were received for the Commission on Disability (COD) and the HRC. These vacancies will be held for the annual recruitment process. Advertising will begin late August through September. Appointments are scheduled for December 16. Government Relations/Kelly. Kelly stated she is continuing efforts to contact the Colorado Civil Rights Commission (CCRC) to no avail. Kelly will also be monitoring housing code votes by City Council Education/Community Outreach Joann Joann stated they had their education meeting on Tuesday night July 8. They decided to distribute flyers for Maya's Sunday July 13, 2008 discussion at Mugs about "The Guru: fact vs. fiction". This is being done as educational follow up to the recent movie release, "The Love Guru' which has received harsh criticism and is being protested by Hindu groups. Flyers were developed and distributed by subcommittee members. Joann asked Maya to provide a brief synopsis of what her presentation will entail. Maya did a brief presentation for HRC members about the topic of her discussion related to "The Guru". Elaine Boni made a motion to support Maya's ability to promote herself as a member of the HRC as she speaks to the issue of "What is a Guru?" at Mugs on Sunday July 13, 2008. Kent Bryan seconded the motion. The motion was approved 6:0. • Public Relations & Community Recognition/Cristina Cristina stated the PR/CR subcommittee met in June to begin working on updating the HRC and HRA websites. Several CSU journalism student guests attend their subcommittee meeting. The meeting focus changed to educating the guests about the HRC, talking about the coffee chats, membership background and their interests in the HRC. HRC members were able to promote the HRC for possible future membership. Cristina stated she has a few website updates and stated the focus of their July meeting is the HRC website. Becky stated she has contacted City MIS staff to make updates to the HR Award website by adding 2007 and 2008 recipient information and updating the online application with 2009 dates. Becky also stated Susan Kirkpatrick thanked the HRC for the generous gesture of the downtown bucks for speaking at the HR Awards Breakfast, and regretted that she prefer not to accept the stipend and returned it to the HRC. Becky provided three DVD's of the 2008 Human Relations Award Program for members to view. Kelly, Elaine and Joann checked out the HR Award DVD's and will return them at next month's meeting. 5. OLD BUSINESS Maya was asked to provide an update from James on the Iraqi Youth Leadership Exchange Program. No further information is available at this time. The HRC will table the planned press release about the program until further notice. HRC July 10, 2008 — Page 3 Kelly stated the Deliberative Dialogue training provided information as to how to prepare for organized talks such as coffee talks, however, more practice forums should have occurred. Follow up to Karen's requested HRC funding assistance for her to attend the Peace Circle Training through CSU on July 14. Karen was asked to provide detailed information as to the training and cost of the Peace Circle Training class at the next HRC meeting. Karen was absent and no information was provided, therefore, and it was decided that funding assistance would not be provided at this time. 6. NEW BUSINESS Maya suggested that the Education/Community Outreach subcommittee consider for future "coffee talk" discussions, songs from Avenue Q, a musical which addresses a lot of social issues with sarcasm and wit, as well as, a bit of song and dance with puppets. The musical itself is coming to Denver September 9-21 and might also work well with the Eracism film series. Elaine volunteered to contact Maryanne for an update as to when business cards and the brochure template will be provided to the HRC. 7.
