CURRENT ITEMS GALLERY BY DESIGN BUILDING #21, OLD TOWN SQUARE The applicant, Mr. Mike Wittmer, requested permission to attach a matching royal blue canvas panel with a white logo to the existing awning over the store entry. The panel, 21" X 72" will be centered on the vertical overhang of the awning. The lettering is 5" at the smallest vertical dimension and 18 at the greatest. Mr. Frick requested the applicant submit details regarding lettering style. Ms. Ketcham made a motion to approve the request subject to the condition that the panel be stitched to the awning in matching thread and subject to staff approval of a complete drawing of lettering. The motion was seconded by Mr. Mutz. Motion approved 4-0. ACSCENTS, #3 OLD TOWN SQUARE, HOWARD BLOCK, 214 E. MOUNTAIN AVENUE The applicant, Mr. Mike Wittmer, requested approval for a two-faced, projecting sign about 48" X 42" X 21" in size. It is to be mounted 8' above grade to a brass fixture which will be mounted with bolt attachments in the mortar. The sign colors will be a tan background with green text. The sign will have a small interchangeable 4" X 24" plexiglass panel with white helvetica lettering. A wrought iron decorative scroll, painted flat black, will top the sign. Mr. Mutz made a motion to approve the request subject to the condition that all attachment fixtures be placed in the mortar, not the brick, of the facade. Ms. Ketcham seconded the motion. Motion approved 4-0. LPC Meeting - December 8, 1988 Minutes Page 2 235 JEFFERSON, REAR ELEVATION: CANYON CONCERT BALLET The applicant, Marilyn Roberts, requested approval for improvements in the facade, windows, and door as well as an awning sign for the entry to the Canyon Concert Ballet, her tenant. The renovation entails six separate steps as follows: Facade: Reclaimed brick from the old Harmony Mill site will be used to recover the facade. Mr. Frick pointed out that the brick detailing and placement could be done in such a way as to tie together various elements of the facade. Ms. Handley stated that with brick detailing the size of such a large canvas awning could be reduced as the brick could provide identification and interest. Awnine: The Commission directed that the tenant, Mr. Hixon, and Mr. Chuck Peterson, who is donating the awning, should work together on one submittal. The LPC could then approve the submittal, given enough information about the proposal. Ms. Ketcham pointed out that the Commission needed the guarantee of exact specifications. Ms. Handley requested a picture of the proposed awning in order to place it in context to the facade. She felt the size may not be appropriate as it appears to dominate the facade of the building. Post Lamn: Ms. Roberts requested direction in finding the right lamp in an antique style to serve as a streetlight for further illumination near the rcnr entry. Relocation and Reoairs: Ms. Roberts stated the ground floor windows will be relocated. They would be the same width as the existing windows but would not be as tall. All the window sills would be aligned. The upper windows will be repaired. The door and window trim will be painted gray. Door: A new door, painted gray, will replace the existing door. It is a salvaged door from an apartment at 229 Jefferson. Mr. Frick asked Ms. Rob- erts to check with the City regarding the minimum requirements for door width. Ms. Handley suggested Ms. Roberts investigate the possibility of handicap access amortization with the City. Ms. Roberts stated the tenant's concern with the unsafe alley and that she had a problem getting adequate information for the Commission before the submit- tal deadline. Mr. Frick and Mr. Mutz both pointed out that though there was conflicting data on the awning portion of the submittal, the concept for the doors and windows were acceptable. However, the Commission requires furthcr, specific information regarding the awnings and facade before final approval could be given. Ms. Handley made a motion to approve the new door and the relocation of the two ground floor windows subject to submittal of details and dimensions, prior to building permit. Mr. Mutz seconded the motion. • • LPC Meeting - December 8, 1988 Minutes Page 3 Motion approved 4-0. NATURE'S OWN IMAGINATION, 021 OLD TOWN SQUARE, BUILDING D The applicant, Gardner Signs, was not present. The proposed signage consists of letters constructed of a plastic, board -like material, 1/2" thick. The letters would be anchored individually into the mortar or on a track which could then be mounted into the mortar. The "Imagination" lettering would be painted gloss gold while "Nature's Own" would be painted flat black. Mr. Frick questioned the size of the letters in view of the space size on the facade. He thought the sign as proposed was too large, and suggested a scaled down revision. Ms. Handley pointed out the material and colors may not be compatible in appearance to surrounding, existing signs. She requested the submittal of a finished material sample. Mr. Mutz made a motion to deny the application as submitted because of the size of the sign, and lack of information about the finished appearance. Ms. Ketcham seconded the motion. Motion approved 4-0. Other Business The Conference Agenda for Colorado Preservation Inc. in Denver, CO on Janu- ary 6, 1989 was discussed. The panel will discuss the economic benefits of Historic Preservation. Ms. Ketcham reminded the Commission of the Annual Victorian Christmas Open House at the Avery House December 2-4, 1988. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:00 p.m. Minutes submitted by Joyce Lewton.
