HomeMy WebLinkAboutYouth Advisory Board - Minutes - 03/07/2007YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES Regular meeting — March 7, 2007 7:00 p.m. Council Liaison: Kurt Kastein Staff Liaison: Steve Budner, Recreation, 221-6861 Board Members Present: Erin Rooney, Laura Lamb, Lee Swanson, Kai Stuckey, Scott Umbreit, Ryan Hennig Board Member(s) Absent: Matt Strauch Staff Members Present: Kristie Blackmon, Coordinator — Recreation Division Janet Urban, Staff Support — Recreation Division Guest(s) Present: None Call meeting to Order: The regular meeting of the Youth Advisory Board was called to order at 6:10 p.m. by Board vice chairperson Erin Rooney. Approval of Minutes from February 7, 2007: On a motion by Ryan Hennig and seconded by Lee Swanson, the minutes of February 7, 2007 were unanimously approved. Agenda Review There were no changes to the agenda. Citizen Participation: There was no citizen participation. Agenda: FINALIZE RETREAT SCHEDULE Board members agreed to attend a retreat on Monday, April 9 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Ben & Jerry's. Suzanne Jarboe -Simpson will facilitate. Prior to the retreat Steve Budner and Matt Strauch will meet with the facilitator to create an agenda. Board support Janet Urban will post the meeting. FOCUS GROUP REPORT — PARKS & RECREATION POLICY PLAN Erin Rooney attended the group on Thursday from 7:00-8:30 p.m.; Matt attended on Friday from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The purpose of the focus groups was to identify the community's vision in order to develop a policy plan. A representative from Triple Crown sports focused on the lack of funding that caused the closure of the YAC. Erin reported that there was not a lot of discussion about youth. TEEN RECOGNITION AWARDS Matt checked to see if the Youth Advisory Board could be involved in this process and/or the presentation. The answer was "no, not at this time". Youth Advisory Board Minutes March 7, 2007 Page 2 PROGRAM/FACILITIES/YOUTH POPULATION MAP The map that was provided by the City's GIS department that includes youth population as a number and a percentage of the total population in each pre -determined census block as well current transit routes will be summarized in report form by Matt Strauch and Erin Rooney. YOUTH PROGRAM UPDATE Kristie Blackmon reported that construction is underway at the new Northside Aztlan Community Center, and August 15 is scheduled as a "soft" opening. Marketing the new facility will include information on "how to get there". There will be no teen drop -in at the YAC, including the climbing wall, as of June 1. June Is' is the YouthFest and Battle of the Bands that will be held in the parking lot of the YAC to celebrate the end of school. During the months of June and July regular pre-school classes will be held at the YAC. The summer Recreator will be distributed on April 17; registration will open on April 19. A new daycamp will be held at Club Tico.... called Camp Tico. Lisa Ratajczak has been hired as the new Child Development Coordinator. OTHER BUSINESS • Lee Swanson suggested that the Board do a better job of advertising themselves and the speakers' series. Erin will draft a news release for the upcoming presentations in the series (April and May), and Lee Swanson will follow up with the Coloradoan. Matt Strauch's graphic designer will create a poster which advertises the April and May presentations. • Erin will check with Matt Strauch on production of the poster to advertise the speakers' series. Lee recommended faxing or delivering the press release to the Coloradoan. Assignments for the next presentation are: Matt — poster Erin — press release by March 28 Janet — get media distribution list to Erin Lee — follow up with media Erin — communication with Mr. Schlehuber ADJOURNMENT On a motion by Laura Lamb and seconded by Ryan Hennig, the Board voted unanimously to adjourn at 6:55 p.m. "The Job Guy" presentation by Lee Swanson will be held immediately following the meeting.
